speed up kde4 and visuals?

Hello there. I hope i’m posting this in te right place. I just upgraded to kde 4.1.3 and, everything works fine, but the visual effects are a bit slow. I was wondering if there is anyway i can speed it up. I remember from the time i was running nvidia there was an option to enable fast write in linux. Is i available anywhere with ati?(not the faswrite enable from bios. did that) For nvidia you had to do the following:

add to /etc/modprobe.conf.local:

options nvidia NVreg_EnableAGPFW=1

Anything like this for ati? any other tip on how to speed up my visuals would be greatly appreciated. Sorry again if i’m posting this in the wrong place.

the drivers for ati have become open source
i found this out at the Advanced Micro Devices, AMD – Global Provider of Innovative Microprocessor, Graphics and Media Solutions web site
prahapse some developement could be done

They made the drivers open source?? :o:O:O Wow, that’s something i never expected. Do you have a link to that article?
We should expect some improvements then, since x developers and suse developers will have access to the drivers.

Linux.com :: It’s official: ATI Radeon drivers to be open sourced
ati open source drivers

Are there any other ideas how to tune KDE 4 to optimize perfomance?
