on my 4-year-old Toshiba a75-s206 laptop i have an Ati Mobility Radeon 9000 igp
can anyone tell me if I’ll be able to use compiz and get 3d effects? I have heard that Opensuse has a partership with Ati/Amd and it has special drivers that other distros don’t have. Is my card supported by these drivers?

The pure Radeon 9000 was well supported under the FOSS radeon
driver, including 3D. My wife’s old laptop, a Dell D600, used
a radeon 9000 and everything worked… but I seem to recall after
updating to a later SUSE (went from 10.0 to 10.3 in stages over
time), that I think I had to install ATI’s proprietary driver
to get some things to work again.

ATI still stinks… sorry… isn’t there quite yet.
There aren’t really special drivers that other distros don’t have, but you can easily get and install the special proprietary ATI drivers using 1-click install. Go to opensuse-community.org/1-click-collection for many proprietary drivers and multimedia codecs, and you will see the current ATI driver that works with 11.0. If you want to run 10.3 or earlier, check the same site’s FAQ for how to access them. That said, many older ATI cards are now supported natively using opensouce drivers. If yours is one of them, it should work out of the box with no monkeying around. If you still want the proprietary driver, check the release notes for the latest ATI drivers to see if your card is supported, by going to AMD’s site and look for ATI graphic support.
