Spanish special characters don't show up in yast nor in vi

Today I installed 11.2 using spanish localization (language/keyboard) at the installation start.

Now the messages in certain programs, like yast or in the console, are in spanish, but the special characters are written wrong:

felisa:~ # man ls
Man: find all matching manual pages

  • ls (1)
    ls (1p)
Man: ¿Qué página de manual desea?
    Man:

The same problem with vi. There all special chars written are printed with rare symbols.

The adjustments in /etc/sysconfig/language are
RC_LANG=“es_ES.UTF-8”

I thought that if I install Opensuse for a special language, all necessary packages and adjustments will be installed automatically?

Can anyone give me a hint how to solve this?

Thanks.

Olá,
I had the same problem. Here’s how I solved it:

Go to “Gnome Menu” > “Applications” > “System Configuration”

In the “Personal” options of the “General” tab click “Region and Language”

In the “Country/Region and Language” first tab you will have an option to “Modify” your country or region. Make the necessary changes.

If you don’t see your language listed in the “Languages” list under that option click “Add language” and chose the correct one.

You can also check the “Keyboard” and the “Spelling” options.

Please note that my system is in Portuguese and I’m making the translations as I go, hence some expressions may be a little diferent.

I hope this helps.
