Sound works only for some types of applications.

Hello, first of all I’m not a native English speaker, and more importantly, I’m new to Linux. I have used it for some times but never went behind basic use to use Internet, save files, write documents with OpenOffice…

I just installed the 11.2 version in 64-bit. I previously used a 11.1 version, and on which sounds worked fine.

I do get the login and logout jingle, and CDs play fine as well.

My problem occurs when I try to watch a video on Internet, so with FlashPlayer, and also when using Skype: I get neither the notification sounds, and a test call tells me I have a problem with the audio device.

When I point my cursor on the “sound” icon on my control board, it tells me the sound is at 0% even though it works for the above-listed tasks.

Here is what my computer has (from “system configuration”), including the last two lines I get when I click the “advanced” option:

HDA VIA VT82xx (VT1708 Analog)
HDA VIA VT82xx (VT1708 Digital)
HDA ATI HDMI, ATI HDMI (HDMI audio output)
PulseAudio

HDA ATI HDMI, ATI HDMI
HDA VIA VT82xx, VT1708 Digital(IEC958(S/PDIF) Digital audio output)

Everything has this same preset configuration: notifications, video, etc.

Would someone please have an idea?

What is the problem? No sound in flash under firefox? No sound in skype ?

I can’t help with skype. I don’t use it. Never have.

Reference firefox and flash not playing audio, it could be a number of things. It could be your PCM volume control needs to be moved up from 0% to 90%. Note this can go down to zero dynamically when a new multimedia application starts, so you need to check it as soon as you start a new multimedia application.

For firefox, you also should check the audio device (and order of devices) you have specified in KDE Kickoff Application Launcher > Configure Desktop > Multimedia (if you are using KDE) is consistent with what you have in YaST > Hardware > Sound for device order.

You also should note that it may not be possible for two multimedia applications to play audio at the same time (dependent on how your audio is set up).

When I pass the cursor over the icon, it tells me volume is set at 0%.
Once I click the icon, I have an indication for IEC with the “Mute” box checked. Un-checking it doesn’t change anything sound-wise.
Once I click the “mixer” button I get several thumbnails:

  • First is “HDA ATI HDMI” which offers only a “mute” box. This one is checked whether I unchecked the IEC one before or not.
  • Second thumbnail is for "HDA VIA VT82xx’ and has 3 scrollbars: Front, PCM, and CD. The scrollbar is set to the maximum on each, and the “mute” boxes for Front and CD are unchecked.
-Third is for the microphone capture, so irrelevant here.

Concerning hardware (using YaST info) I have:

0 RV610 audio device (Radeon HD2400 PRO)
1 VT1708/A [Azalia HDAC] (VIA High Definition Audio Controler)

(I’m afraid this should have been posted on the Multimedia forum, please feel free to move it if necessary!)

Have you tried to configure the sound in Yast? Do you get the test sound there?

This is a good guide to help you setup your multimedia applications: Multi-media and Restricted Format Installation Guide - openSUSE Forums

I do not have any sound when I test the 0 (Radeon) card, but it works fine with the 1 (VIA) card. In the settings, PCM was set at 100% and Master Front at 0%, I set them both at 50% to see if it would change anything. It doesn’t.

Using KMix (the icon I was speaking of before,) PCM is set on 50% but the “Front” scrollbar is still set at the maximum.

I recommend PCM levels at around 90% until sound is established, and once established back off to levels low enough to avoid distortion.

It means my “Master Front” settings should be brought down to 15% at most. If I am to test the sound, don’t I risk thinking something doesn’t work while it is only too low to be heard? I don’t know what depends on “Master Front” a opposed to the other settings.

Setting it higher will be too loud, I only use headphones.

So ??? sound works in headphones. Thats a new piece of information. :\

I think I had mentioned in my first post that I do get the jingles when I log in or out, and that I can play a CD with Kaffeine.
In these conditions, does using headphones change anything? I assumed it didn’t differ from using speakers.

When you plug in headphones, speakers will automatically be muted. I assume you know that?

My headphones + mic are directly plugged into the computer. I do not have any speakers, currently.
This is what I already had before upgrading to the 11.2 version, and I didn’t have this problem, so I assumed the issue laid elsewhere.

Again as noted, reference your sound in your browser:

Is this what you’re referring to? I’m afraid my description was unclear in my first post, I lack the specific vocabulary (especially in English!)

KDE Kickoff Application Launcher > Configure Desktop > Multimedia

HDA VIA VT82xx (VT1708 Analog)
HDA VIA VT82xx (VT1708 Digital)
HDA ATI HDMI, ATI HDMI (HDMI audio output)
PulseAudio

YaST shows the following:
0 RV610 audio device (Radeon HD2400 PRO)
1 VT1708/A [Azalia HDAC] (VIA High Definition Audio Controler)

If you mean something else, I’m sorry, but I have no idea about what you’d be speaking about. I have opened no applications apart from Firefox right now, so I don’t know if there is any competition.

That looks consistent / ok.

Oooops … disregard my last post.

The order is wrong here in YaST.

Delete sound card 0 “0 RV610 audio device (Radeon HD2400 PRO)” and setup sound card1 “1 VT1708/A [Azalia HDAC] (VIA High Definition Audio Controler)” to be the new sound card 0.

You can then setup “RV610 audio device (Radeon HD2400 PRO)” to be sound card 1 if you want.

I did this, and rebooted just in case, but nothing has changed. Once YaST made the change, I get the following message (rough translation):

KDE has detected that one or more internal sound peripherals have been taken off. Do you wnat KDE to permanently forget these peripherals? Here is the list of peripherals KDE thinks have been taken off:

(KDE a détecté qu’un ou plusieurs périphériques internes de son ont été enlevés.
Voulez-vous que KDE oublie ces périphériques de façon permanente ?
Voici la liste des périphériques que KDE pense être enlevés

Capture : HDA VIA VT82xx (VT1708 Analog)
Sortie : HDA ATI HDMI (ATI HDMI)
Sortie : HDA ATI HDMI, ATI HDMI (HDMI Audio Output)
Sortie : HDA VIA VT82xx (VT1708 Analog)
Sortie : HDA VIA VT82xx (VT1708 Digital)
Sortie : HDA VIA VT82xx, VT1708 Digital (IEC958 (S/PDIF) Digital Audio Output)

I didn’t accept, so they are still taken into account. Should I cancel them?

Oops! “Sortie” means “output”.
I am under the impression KDE wishes to cancel, well, everything. What have I missed?

I do not understand why this is in KDE, but I always say accept (ie remove them when asked).

I there a way I could restore them later if needed?
