Sound: Volume setting is not sticky

SuSE 9.2. AC97 audio.

I am trying to increase the audio output level from the soundcard.

In YAST I can set the volume control sliders to 100, and the sound level increases to a comfortable level. I save everything and quit YAST. Everything is fine…

… until I logout and login again. The audio is back to its original low level. In YAST I select Hardware > Sound, and as soon as YAST has read the hardware environment (without making any changes on my part), the audio level jumps back up to 100 again. I save everything and quit YAST. Everything is fine…

… until I logout and login again.

What do I have to do to make the volume level stick from session to session?

Adjust everything, then become root on a console and try
alsactl store

9.2 is dead. If this machine is in any way exposed to the internet or used internally for security relevant purposes, replace the OS, since you will not receive any updates or security fixes.

Problem solved. When I opened Kmix, the PCM slider was at zero (even though I had set it to 100 in YAST). I moved the slider to maximum, and it stayed there. Case closed!

Yes, I discovered that when I tried to update just now.
