sound, video and mouse --- yes all three are related - openSuSE 12.3

My problem started out with loss of sound after an UpDate. I have an HP m7840n with an AC97 for sound. I also have an nVidia GTX560 that has an nVidia HDMI chip on it. They conflict. In a previous UpDate I experienced this sound loss and could swear that I recorded somewhere how I fixed it -but- the fix is not to be found. I do know that the HDMI was totally disabled and I was using alsa and the AC97.

In trying to fix this I unconditionally UpDated the 3 alsa items. As a result I have not only lost my sound -but- also my mouse buttons!! I can move the mouse cursor but the buttons have no effect. The mouse and keyboard are wireless and both go thru the same receiver. As an experiment I plugged in a USB mouse -and- the buttons worked!! I know the wireless mouse is NOT broken cause it works on another machine. I have two towers connected to the same display, keyboard and mouse thru an “IOGEAR 2-Port USB DVI-D”. The other tower has openSuSE 13.2 on it.

Yes I have powered down the system and it did not help. Anyone have any thoughts on what I could do to correct my errors??

Thanks,
-Chuck

An update? In 12.3? This release is not maintained, there are no
updates. How exactly did you update it?

Not at all sure what you did??? I suggest you remove the last set of packages you added since you apparently broke something. Review the repos you have. Be sure they are all compatible

If you go through a KVM switch it can sometimes confuse the system on what is attached

Hello my friend,

Yes... there are UpDates to 12.3 still. I was notified and installed them... something like 86 of them. The box in my signature is my newest one and I still have 12.3 on the older one.

-Chuck

I really don’t think the switch is the problem. Keyboard and video still work fine and the mouse cursor is fine. Just the buttons are the problem. I do like your first suggestion and I will try to remove the alsa UpDates that I did.

Actually, I just did a “forced UpDate” of the same pacakges: alsa, alsa-firmware and alsa-utilities. So there was no real update on those. Now as to the others… wow. I’m not sure how to revert all those.

-Chuck

I don’t believe 12.3 has updates so maybe you have some other version mixed in??

https://en.opensuse.org/Portal:12.3

Nawww… I don’t want to argue – and I respect all of you for your knowledge -but- I was notified of UpDates and I finally applied them -and- like some UpDates before … my system got messed up. Now then, you were correct on the KVM. I shut down both systems for 10 min or so and then fired them back up. My mouse is working fine … again. Still no sound and that is cause of the nVidia HDMI conflict with my AC97. Just can not remember what was done the last time — but I do believe that you -or- one of the other Moderators helped me. Thanks for the past and thanks for now.

-Chuck

No don’t think so if you got notified you have some other version in one or more repos. hard to tell what came in

The support for openSUSE 12.3 has ended on January 29th 2015 after over 21 months of lifetime.

This is also the symptom of a low battery in a wireless device. I understand you believe your testing eliminated the possibility.

This is also a symptom of a capacitance build up that requires a very extensive system power down of ALL connected PCs to remove.

I had an old KVM where i would see such capacitance build up at times. The solution was a 100% power down of everything connected to that KVM. Even two unrelated PCs (that worked fine) had to be powered down to remove the capacitance from the KVM. This also included unplgging the KVMs and PCs from the wall. it was a painful solution (probably quicker would have been to pull the breaker for the room).

I know you said you powered down the ‘system’ but that is very general. What I had to do was a 100% power down AND unplugging of the system, as even when powered down the KVM and the PCs would still maintain the capacitance that was causing the problem. They had to be unplugged from the wall so to remove the capacitance.

I’m not saying that is the cause for you, but it would be worthwhile to test if not done already.

Ah yes, you possibly missed my reply to gogalthorp above. I did the ultimate power off reset of BOTH systems … waited … and upon power up the mouse worked properly. How-some-ever, my sound, the original problem, still does not work.:frowning: I just have to remember what I did the last time to kill totally the nVidia HDMI and enable my AC97 alsa. I was hoping to get memory joggers from you all… besides… I have been messing with Android on my phone and haven’t been around here for a while.

Please, you have to post all that inside a code tags section. The ‘#’
button in the forum editor.

12.3 distribution stopped maintenance long ago. This was the announcement:

packman was to be disabled on PMBS last Thursday. It may disappear from
mirrors soon, up to them. But it will publish no more updates, building
has been disabled.

These two repos are certainly not updated since 02-feb, as you can see
for yourself. The security updates come from there, and there has been
none since February, and there will be none.

It is possible that some of the other repositories are still building
and publishing updates, automatically. You can find out yourself what
exactly was updated.

In Yast Sound Card try changing the order of the sound devices. If the HDMI is first that is probably the source of the problem since that would then be device 0 and used by default.

In Yast2:
0 — ICH7 (AC97)
Not configured — nVidia Corporation <— this is the GF114

However, in the mixer the GF114 is the only one listed for Playback Devices.
In the ‘Mixer Settings’ - ‘Audio Setup’ under tab ‘Device Preference’ - ‘Audio Playback’ - ‘Music’ both devices are listed -but- the AC97 is grayed out and I can not switch them.

In the ‘Mixer Settings’ - ‘Audio Setup’ under tab ’ Audio Hardware’ — the GF114 is selected by default and shows speaker left and speaker right with a people icon in the middle. IF I change the selection to the AC97 it changes to just a straight line.

And I apologize for forgetting the # code in that repo report. I haven’t been on here for a while and unfortunately I am forgetful.

This should have been in my last message:

An ‘lspci’ prior to this error would show:

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01)

Now this shows:

01:00.1 Audio device: NVIDIA Corporation GF114 HDMI Audio Controller (rev a1)

Isn’t there a config file somewhere that I can change to fix this?? My mind is telling me it is that simple -but- I just can not remember.

Thanks,
-Chuck

Not that I’m aware. lspci looks direct at the hardware if the hardware is not detected it is not there as far as the OS is concerned. Are you sure that the NVIDIA is the ONLY driver listed?

HDMI audio only: I had this situation recently.

After the scummv emulator borked my sound setup, I had to disable pulseaudio and only use alsa.

Later to reinstate the system I had to reenable pulseaudio in Yast>Sound>Other>Pulseaudio Configuration.

After that both nvidia HDMI and HC97 audio controllers became available, I only had to set priorities and IINM reboot to get back the KDE mixer.

oS 13.2 64-bits, KDE 4.14.8, NVidia GTX650.

Tried that … no worky. Have errands to run -but- will investigate further when I return. IF and WHEN I find the answer I will post it here. Had this problem once before and thought that I wrote it up -BUT- I can not find the notes!!

Thanks to all who have replied,
-Chuck

A reboot - or two - was also necessary, in the best windows fashion.

Gentlemen (and ladies IF any are present),

As it turns out, I had a problem that “I’m sure NONE of you” have ever experienced. A used up CR2032!! In my recent UpDates – and I really did have them – I had done something that I hadn’t done in a long time… powered off my 'puter. Ya’ll know that the BIOS settings … at least some of them … rely on a battery back up. Well, I found my notes from the previous sound problem.

After installation of this card, the onboard Realtek audio, for our sound system, disappeared. The solution, which the ‘Lord’ directed us to, was to go to the BIOS and Permanently Enable the Onboard Audio. It ‘was’ set to ‘Auto’. Changed it to:
***F1 on reboot, Advanced → Onboard Audio → Enable

Since the settings got lost, the Audio was back to ‘Auto’ and the AC97 was not being detected. Put it back to Enabled -and- Sound is now working. I said I would let you know what the problem was/is … well this is for any future forgetful old timers. (oldcpu excluded ;))

Once again… This was NOT the machine in my signature. It was/is my old one that I am still using: an HP m7480n

Thanks to all,
-Chuck
