sound problems

I’m getting no sound out of my Linux Medriva Open SUSE.

I’m curious. What is Linux Medriva Open SUSE ?

After pondering this, did you mean to say you are getting no sound out of

  • Mandriva Linux, nor
  • openSUSE Linux

If so, then its possible we may be able to help you with your openSUSE Linux sound problem.

Our forum is not intended to help Mandriva Linux users with their problems (I believe there are Mandriva Linux forums for that).

Please advise as to your Linux distribution and your version number.

Dear friend, how do I find out my Linux distribution number and the version? As I think that you said, thank you!!!:shame:

If you can find the following file:

/etc/SuSE-release

then you’re running some version of SUSE Linux. The contents of the file will tell you which version.

You could also type uname -a into a shell and post the output.

I know I’m using some sort of OPEN SUSE LINUX MEDRIVA. I just don’t know a lot about computers, so please be extra specific with me on this. Thank you, Reuben;).

I don’t think there is any sort of Linux called “Medriva”. As far as I know (and if I am wrong someone please correct me) there is no openSUSE Linux known as Medriva.

There is a Linux known as Mandriva. That is a different distribution from openSUSE Linux and we do not support Mandriva Linux on this forum.

Please, copy and paste the following into a gnome-terminal or a kde konsole (they look like a ms-windows dos box) and paste here the output.

grep -ihs "buntu\|SUSE\|Fedora\|PCLinuxOS\|MEPIS\|Mandriva\|Debian\|****\|Sabayon\|Slackware\|KNOPPIX\|Gentoo\|Zenwalk\|Mint\|Kubuntu\|FreeBSD\|Puppy\|Freespire\|Vector\|Dreamlinux\|CentOS\|Arch\|Xandros\|Elive\|SLAX\|Red\|BSD\|KANOTIX\|Nexenta\|Foresight\|GeeXboX\|Frugalware\|64\|SystemRescue\|Novell\|Solaris\|BackTrack\|KateOS\|Pardus" /etc/{issue,*release,*version}

That should tell us what Linux version you have.

I don’t know how to paste, or even if I pasted it were to look for a gnome “thing, forgot what you called it”. I’m really computer illliteret. Please help.;).

How to cut, copy and paste:

Try using google, … for example, typing Gnome terminal in google:
gnome terminal - Google Search

gives this:
GNOME Terminal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In openSUSE, at the bottom is a taskbar
on the left is a start button
click it and look for Yast
click it and when the window comes up enter the root password
now click Hardware > Sound
work your way through that
then
in the lower right of that window is a button “Other”
click it and select volume
set all the sliders to 77% & “Test”
save out of all that

now in the taskbar there’s a speaker icon
open that and make sure nothing is muted
should work

if not,
Start > Configure Desktop > Sound > Backend
What’s the Device shown there?

Get back and someone will try to help;)
