I just installed Opensuse 42.1 on a new computer and the sound is gone. Tried with this guidelindes https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Audio_troubleshooting , http://opensuse-guide.org/codecs.php . Moreover, tried to install using the old one click install .ymp. But nothing work
When I type
/usr/sbin/hwinfo --sound

After the upgrade of the installation something change, but there is no sound yet

To add more information. I installed pavucontrol and it shows that somethig put the sound in silence
https://sselbergg.files.wordpress.com/2016/05/sc.png
This shows that (aparently) the computer reproduces sounds but it is muted (“Silencio” in the image) by something.
Solved!
I followed this post https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/512296-Fresh-install-No-sound Last line
pacmd set-card-profile 0 output:hdmi-surround
Solved the problem.
Good to know, and may be helpful to others who come searching. Thanks for the update.
Sound it`s gone again.
I have a problem with the keyboard and I have to update the BIOS, this fixed an annoying problem in my keyboard but now audio don`t work. All the steps given before did not work.
When I start the computer it shows the message
snd_hda_intel 0000:00:1b.0: no codecs found!
I have researched on the web and found this (https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/486313-No-sound-on-openSUSE-12-3-since-the-upgrade-on-snd-hda-intel ) but did not work for me. Some screen shots of pavucontrol and Yast->Sound
https://sselbergg.files.wordpress.com/2016/05/sc1.png
https://sselbergg.files.wordpress.com/2016/05/ya.png
Clearly, there are one output which the system do not recognize. Any suggestion?
Edit: when I do ¨Edit-> Automatic configuration¨ in Broadwell-U Audio Controller it shows
https://sselbergg.files.wordpress.com/2016/05/br.png
¨The kernel module snd-hda-intel for sound support cannot be loaded. This can be due to invalid module parameters, including invalid E/S and IRQ¨
Edit2: And plasma is crashing a lot of times

I note this post:
where it appears you are using an HDMI output for sound. Is that correct ? Frankly, I do not know what that “pacmd set-card-profile” command is supposed to do.
Looking at the above script, I note :
!!PCI Soundcards installed in the system
!!--------------------------------------
00:03.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation Broadwell-U Audio Controller (rev 09)
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation Wildcat Point-LP High Definition Audio Controller (rev 03)
Two audio devices detected. … But in the aplay I note only one audio device:
!!Aplay/Arecord output
!!--------------------
APLAY
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: HDMI [HDA Intel HDMI], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
Subdevices: 0/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: HDMI [HDA Intel HDMI], device 7: HDMI 1 [HDMI 1]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: HDMI [HDA Intel HDMI], device 8: HDMI 2 [HDMI 2]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
ie only card-0 for HDMI and no analog audio. Is that what you want ?
and finally on the dmesg I note:
!!ALSA/HDA dmesg
!!--------------
4.213309] dcdbas dcdbas: Dell Systems Management Base Driver (version 5.6.0-3.2)
4.223635] snd_hda_intel 0000:00:03.0: enabling device (0000 -> 0002)
4.223841] snd_hda_intel 0000:00:03.0: bound 0000:00:02.0 (ops i915_audio_component_bind_ops [i915])

4.227486] snd_hda_intel 0000:00:1b.0: no codecs found!
no codecs found. That suggests to me the hardware codec for the analog audio device can’t be found.
What can you tell us about your PC ? Are you planning to use HDMI or analog audio ?
.
Well, I would say that I want both them, but I don`t know why one appear and the other no.

To be honest, I just want sound, I have not a clear idea of what is the difference between HDMI or the Analog. This is a Dell xps13 9343.

There are some quirks mentioned in the following discussions for this model laptop (one concerns those dual booting with Windows)
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2275027
https://bartongeorge.net/2015/04/09/4th-gen-dell-xps-13-developer-edition-available/
and an associated bug report that may be of interest

Thanks deano_ferrari and oldcup. Yes, effectively I did cold boot twice and everything works fine now (both devices appear).
