sound on tv monitor

I have been using an old lcd tv as my monitor. I have an hdmi cable connecting the pc to the tv. It works well as a monitor but the sound is not directed to the tv. I thought the hdmi cable carried the sound signal. But I see no way to select the tv/monitor speakers for output. I am stuck with the little speaker in the pc cabinet. If I can find the right cabling, would using the pc headphone jack work to power the tv/monitor speakers? Or, is there a better way?

Install and start pavucontrol and see, if your hdmi output is there and choose the profile.

Add paprefs also to pavucontrol so you can enjoy simultaneous sound with
hdmi and your speakers when you able to solve the problem with your hdmi audio.

I cannot do this. My file list has not updated automatically in a week. When I tried zypper dup, I get a long list of requests to change vendors. So many that I gave up the update and cancelled. Is something wrong at opensuse? Trying to add paprefs via yast gives me a similar error except it offers no other vendor.

I’ve run both pavucontrol and the QT version. On the configuration tab, there are a half dozen hdmi options listed but all say (unavailable). I’m guessing if I can get paprefs, those options will become available?

There’s probably a few conflicting repo in your repo lists.
Do as what the other poster’s advice.
In any case if you just wanted to add paprefs, just use yast2
It would not prompt you for so many conflicts because you are only going to
install one app.

Yesterday, I updated via zypper dup which works. The update widget that I kept on my desktop continues to fail. Also, I must launch Chrome 4 times before it works. Firefox and Tor browser launch normally.

Hi
Consider any update applet Work In Progress… suggest you only use zypper dup for Tumbleweed…

I followed the advice given many times: only update via zypper dup. I use the widget as an alert. I update when the widget says there a large number of updates available. But I generally update once a week, based on available updates. I’m going to try to install that paprefs selecting the break dependencies option. It won’t work any less than it does now!

As you would expect, using broken dependencies failed. Worse than that, I somehow broke my pc sound system! I cannot get sound from the computer speaker. I used little portable speakers that connect via usb or headphone jack. Neither works.

I dual boot to windows and, at first, the speaker didn’t work there either. But clicking on various options, the speaker came back in windows but not in opensuse. I plugged in an actual headphone and that works in opensuse. I am no longer interested in hdmi. I just want my pc speaker back. Do I have to re-install the OS?

Reinstalling IMO is not a solution. Use pavucontrol and set the speakers as the default. Next, also check the volume slider applet -> Applications. Yesterday I found my Firefox not outputting any sound, and found that Firefox itself was muted.

I have tried using pavucontrol to solve this but it doesn’t work. When I open it, there are 5 tabs on top. The middle one is “Output Devices.”

The drop down box of “Port” has 3 options:
Speakers (unavailable)
Headphones (plugged in)
Line out (unplugged)

I’m guessing Line Out is the rear headphone output. It didn’t work for me before. That’s why I switched the headphones to the front port. They work from the front port.

Once again, I’m trying to get the internal speaker to work. If I reboot to Windows 10, the internal speaker DOES work.

This likely is ALSA (driver) related. It might be helpful to get the hardware details, and examine ALSA-related settings. For that run the alsa-info.sh diagnostic script. It can upload the output to an online server, and you can share the link that it provides here.
https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Audio_troubleshooting#Script_to_run_to_obtain_detailed_information

I ran the script and the output was hundreds of lines. To be honest, it was meaningless to me. One item caught my eye. Under “Rear Ext Speaker” there was a line that said “misc=NO PRESENCE” The link provided was http://alsa-project.org/db/?f=fefefaa7d06bc7198562f01354f9efeab6337a77
Reviewing this file is too much to ask. I can live with headphones.

I didn’t ask you to review it - it is to share with others who may be able to advise further. Definitive output rather than just qualitatively describing.

Ok, this is monumentally confusing. I have been using headphones to replace my (missing) speaker while listening to some Beethoven. I tried plugging a little speaker, that is supposed to plug into a cell phone, into the headphone jack. As before, it didn’t work. Next I switched to a similar little speaker that has the same headphone jack but also has a usb plug which seems to power it up. That didn’t work when I plugged in the jack. I next plugged in the usb cable, so both connections were plugged in at the same time, and that powered up the little speaker but it didn’t work. In frustration, I yanked out both connections and Beethoven began pouring out of my computer’s speaker!

I’m tempted to credit running that alsa script, but the speaker still didn’t work until I plugged, then unplugged, the two connections simultaneously. I guess we can mark this thread solved, but it won’t help anyone else that has the speaker problem!

I thank everyone for trying to help me out of my self-induced problem.

Maybe an issue with the headphone jack itself. These sometimes incorporate an internal switch to cut back over to speaker output when headphone jacks are not plugged in. Anyway, glad to read that it is working for you again.

I’ve seen a yast2-sound update when I zypper dup yesterday.
There might be a fix.

There might be muted lines in your audio configuration.
You can easily check it with the xfce4-mixer.

The alsa-info.sh output didn’t suggest any issues with muting. In any case, the OP has posted that sound through the speakers is now working again.
