Sound on 11.4

Howdy,

I am happy with the stability of 11.4 64 bit (2.6.37-rc5-12-desktop) , but I now found that I have a sound issue.

If I do a sound test in Yast hardware manager, it plays over the speakers, but other applications cannot see the sound device. Only the dummy device is available to some things.

Any ideas how to debug this?

What desktop(s) are you using?

It is a Gnome Beta.

Control centre, Sound, Hardware, Choose a device to configure, is empty. No devices show up.

“rcalsasound restart” is OK and reports an Intel device.

cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp

Works, and plays white noise, but nothing else does, so their is a missing configuration item in Gnome somewhere.

Hmm, my user account is not a member of the audio group. I’ll fix that, logout/in and report back.

OK, adding the ‘audio’ group and a hard reboot got sound working.

So there is a default groups configuration problem when the user accounts are created in this Beta.

Now to get Skype and the camera sorted out…
