Sound not working on new install of 15.2

Hi Folks

I have just installed 15.2 on my Dell XPS 8920 Tower PC, Intel Core i7, 16GB, 2TB + 256GB M.2 SSD, NVIDIA GTX 1060. This was an install rather than an upgrade.

I am using KDE and have installed my usual programs and have various video codecs working but I have no sound.

I have used Yast to configure sound card 0 (200 Series PCH HD Audio) and have left the Nvidia card unconfigured. The volumes are all turned to 100% in Yast but no sound.

PulseAudio Volume Control Configuration shows GP106 and Built-in Audio have Profile ‘Off’. All the options are unplugged. How do I plug one in? The other tabs show movement when I play something and are turned up.

Incidentally, there is nothing wrong physically (I think) since:

speaker-test -Dplug:front -c2 -l5 -twav

works! but

speaker-test -c2 -l5 -twav

does’t work!

I assume that I need to get an option plugged in and then saved so that it comes up next time. Am I right and if so how do I do it?

I have set (what I think should be) the default profile as you suggested and now PulseAudio Volume Control Configuration shows Built-in Audio Profile 'Analog Surround 2.1 Output + Analog Stereo Input (unplugged). Still no sound as before.

The intel card has most of the profiles reported as not available. In particular the active profile is reported as

Is analog surround sound what you’re trying to use?

This can happen when an associated input profile is not available for example, although there might be a different underlying issue causing this as well…

I set the default profile as you suggested using the link you gave and this is what seemed to be most appropriate:
output:analog-surround-21+input:analog-stereo

I am trying to use analog sound through a stereo jack. This does work on left and right speakers when I try: speaker-test -Dplug:front -c2 -l5 -twav
but not when I try to play sound or video files.

I’m not certain (based on your replies here) that you are using a surround sound system. Do you have speakers with an amplifier connected to line out or similar? If so, the “output:analog-stereo” profile would be more appropriate.

I do have speakers with an amplifier connected to line out and have now changed the default profile to the “output:analog-stereo”. It still says ‘unplugged’ but now I can’t hear it when using ‘speaker-test -Dplug:front -c2 -l5 -twav’ any more!

How do I get it ‘plugged’ in?

To be honest, I’m not sure why the profiles are reported as not available (available: no). Try unplugging and re-plugging the speakers. Check if the availability status changes.

You could also kill and relaunch pulseaudio, then observe the logging via a terminal

pulseaudio -k && pulseaudio -vv

Does it detect the speakers being plugged in?

With some sound playing (eg music or video with sound), observe the following

pacmd list-sinks

sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*

Hopefully, others can chime in here with further advice.

Hi deano_ferrari

I am pleased to report that my sound is now working. Your suggestion of unplugging and plugging back in got me to visit the rear of my machine and I noticed that there were several sockets. I tried a different one and this had the desired effect, giving me some entries that were not unplugged. The strange thing is that it had been plugged into that socket since I bought the machine 3 years ago and had worked with previous versions of OpenSuse (and Windows - which I hate using as I have to change BIOS settings). Music and video work fine as do both the two speaker tests that I mentioned. The only strange thing now is that the Yast sound test doesn’t work! This I can live with :slight_smile:

Glad to read that you managed to get sound working via the speakers. I’m not sure why the effective line-out socket changed though. I know the ‘hdajackrestask’ utility can help with mapping audio jack ports to internal pins on given Intel HDA sound cards. The way the driver is implemented may have an influence on the default configuration perhaps…
