Sound not working. Again

opensuse v11.3
linux 2.6.34.4-0.1-desktop x86_64

After the latest round of updates approx Sep 10, sound has stopped working. (I rarely need sound for anything so it took a while to notice.) In Yast :: Hardware :: Sound it lists all of the devices that were previously defined.

  • 0: SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)
  • 1: RS780 Azalia controller
  • 2: Logitech USB headset
  • 3: USB Audio

Yet when I go to Gnome :: Control Center :: Hardware :: Sound and select the tab Hardware, nothing is listed. I suspect this is why there is no sound.

How do I go about reloading the hardware into the hardware listing?

Never mind. When I had restarted after the Sep 10 updates, I ended at the text login prompt because the video driver had to be rebuilt for the new kernel. I then just restarted the session with “startx”. It worked, so it seemed. Apparently that is Not The Way To Do This.

After rebooting and getting a proper graphics login screen, the sound was also available.
