sound issues with new sound card

After installing an external sound card, Im having some weird issues.
The cards chipset is fully supported by suse, (CM8738) so I dont think thats the problem. Besides, I’m getting sound, but not in some applications.

The system’s sounds work just fine (login, logout themes) amarok plays without any problems, kaffeine, mplayer they all work flawlessly, in fact I can see the difference in quality between the onboard sound and my new card. However, no web browser is able to play any sound at all, firefox, opera or chrome, nothing, zip. Plus, vlc cant reproduce sound either, nor can smplayer.

I’ve tried switching channels on and off(muting)in kmixer and in alsamixer, on the console, with no results. I disabled the onboard audio on the bios before installing the new card, however my ati video card has integrated sound, which I cant disable…

I used to get this exact same problem randomly with the onboard sound, but I just had to go to kmixer and turn up the “pcm” channel volume, which was set to 0, and I had sound again on my browser. However this card’s pcm channel is at max and turning it up or down affects the whole systems volume, not just the browser’s.

what can be causing this problem???
Is it better to just reinstall the sound system, if so how could I do that.

Thanks in advance,
Still a noob but absorbing every bit of knowledge I can lol!

Please don’t cry. When you had used the default character size of the Forums, everybody could have read your post without scrolling.

The large font does make it very difficult to read the post.

But from what I can see you have two and maybe three significant problems:

    1. I suspect you have way too many repositories. You should limit yourself to ONLY OSS, Non-OSS, Update and Packman. The 1st three are official. The 4th is the largest and the best for multimedia. No others than those 4. None. If you add others you WILL have problems, just like you reported (and more severe problems).
    1. You have likely mixed rpms from videolan and packman. That is practically guranteed to ensure your sound is muted in some applications. Replace ALL of your videolan packaged applications (except libdvdcss) with Packman packaged applictions. ALL of them.
    1. Your firefox not playing sound could be because of the above 2 reasons. Or it could also be because you have not kept an eye on your PC’s PCM volume which may dynamically go to zero when you start a video in firefox. It also may because your settings in YaST > Hardware > Sound do not match (in terms of sound device priority) your order of devices in KDE Configure Destkop> Multimedia. … It may also (in addition to ALL of the above) be because you just need to go to firefox > edit > preferences > applications and change “shockwave flash file” setting to “use flash-player (default)”.

… now if I could read your post (but I can’t because of the silly fonts) I might be able to narrow down the problem more, but I can’t easily read your entire post.

Im so sorry, I have trouble reading the messages here, with the default fonts. I thought everybody else had that problem :shame:

Funny thing is; changing the fonts didnt make a difference, I still see my original message small as hell. Maybe its an issue with opera.? It is giving me troubles with flash applications already so i wouldnt be surprised…

Oldcpu: You are tottally right. I do have quite a few repositories enabled. Right now I’m gonna try giving packman the highest priority and comment out all others except oss, non-oss, updates, and wine-cvs maybe that’ll fix it.

Here is a copy of my original post, I cant figure out how to edit it so I’ll just copy it here.

Hope this help you to read it better:

(Feel free to erase my original post if you can

Changed the size in the first post as you requested.

Maybe try another browser (Konqueror/FireFox) to check if your minifont persists. You could also try to change at the bottom-left of the Forums page to change '—openSUSE default ‘to openSUSE basic’.

multiple sound devices eh ?? ok, play close attention to this recommendation:

… It also may because your settings in YaST > Hardware > Sound do not match (in terms of sound device priority) your order of devices in KDE Configure Destkop> Multimedia. …

Oldcpu you got it man, that was the root of the problem. I deleted my old sound card configuration and reconfigured this one.
Everything works a treat now.

Thank you so much!

Superb! Congratulations and well done in sorting this.
