I just intalled suse 11.2, running KDE on a Dell Studio 1535. There is sound on bootup and logout, but not through media players, YouTube, etc.
I tried alsamixer – nothing is muted, levels are fine.
Here is some code requested in another thread:

Please, let me say WELL DONE in an EXCELLENT help request post. You researched before and provided superb information.
OpenSUSE is crippled for proprietary video and sound as packaged, so what needs to be done is replace your Novell/SuSE-GmbH packaged multimedia applications with packman packaged applications. You can tell Packman packaged applications by a “pm” in the rpm version number.
Please follow the guidance here:
Multi-media and Restricted Format Installation Guide - openSUSE Forums
Note I recommend ONLY OSS, Non-OSS, Update and Packman repos. No others. None. Not one. You can add others once you become an openSUSE expert (or well informed average user). Hence you can disable repos #2 in the list you provided (as it is your CD and it will keep nagging for you to insert your CD/DVD until you disable that).

Best of luck in your efforts, and if you get stumped, please do not spin your wheels. Instead post in our forum for help.
Wow, oldcpu – definitely a crazy learning curve, but I somehow scrambled my way through the process in your tutorial… and I’m listening to some internet radio as I write.
Thank you!
