For some reason, I now have sound in my earbuds but not my speakers. I looked t the mixer settings and they are OK–i.e. speakers are not muted etc. I also verified the sound settings in YaST–the speaker volume is not “0” but at 100%.
What are earbuds ? Headphones ? If you remove those, does sound work ?
I note a 64-bit openSUSE-12.3 on a System76 Gazell Pro (gazp8) with a VIA VT1802 hardware audio codec. You have a custom 3.8.6-desktop kernel and not the baseline kernel that came with openSUSE-12.3. Did this problem start after you updated to this newer kernel version ??
I note also alsa Driver version k3.8.6-2-desktop and 1.0.26 of alsa where the baseline driver is the k3.7.10-1.1-desktop driver (that comes with openSUSE-12.3). Did your sound ever work with that k3.8.6-2-desktop driver and your newer kernel ?
I see the snd_hda_intel alsa module is loaded. But I also note pulse audio is NOT running which ‘might’ be your problem.
Did you try installing ‘pavucontrol’ and then enable pulse audio ? (double check by running the diagnostic script to confirm pulse audio is running). Does that work ?
I see nothing obvious in the mixer settings that could explain the lack of audio, other than possibly the settings for “Dynamic Power-Control” (which is Disabled) nd “Independant HP” (whch is OFF). I do not know your hardware so I can not comment if those are correct settings.
Assuming your new kernel version / new alsa driver did not cause the problem, I recommend you focus your efforts on the pulse audio configuration where your PC has pulse disabled.
As it turns out, I was able to fix the issue be doinga cold restart. Now everyhting is working corectly. Before I was just rebooting/restarting services–even when I put a boot disk into the tray.
Also, the issue ocurred before the upgrade to kernel 3.8.
