sound in amarok but no pavucontrol

Hello,
I am working to install openSUSE 12.2 on a client’s computer, and I am finding an interesting problem here. I have sound in Amarok, but not with flash on a web browser or in Audacity.

I installed pavucontrol, but when I run it, I get an error that says “Fatal Error: Unable to connect to PulseAudio: OK”.

Here is the command line output when I try and run pavucontrol:

Jun@ntmpi:~> pavucontrol

(pavucontrol:4070): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_main_quit: assertion `main_loops != NULL' failed

(pavucontrol:4070): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_main_quit: assertion `main_loops != NULL' failed

Here is my hardware on my sound card:

Any help please? Sound is critical to my clients operations, so I want to make sure and get this to work for him.

My user is a member of the audio group in yast. Please let me know anything else I can post here to give more information.

Thanks in advance,
G.O.

Personally in KDE (Can we assume you are using KDE)
I have never had need to use anything other than kmix (the kde default sound mixer)
Set your primary device in Yast > Hardware > Sound
Then in kde system settings > Multimedia >
see this: https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B3e0lLG3OdqETmRKb0pSZFdIa1k
Make sure you set the same device as preferred here.

Also check kmix settings too for the correct selection of device

If you launch pavucontrol immediately after boot (before running amarok other other app) do you obtain same error ?

Yes, I am using KDE. I just rebooted without amarok automatically starting and I ran pavucontrol from a konsole, and still got the same error.

I also went into Yast>hardware>sound and checked the devices there. On the “other” tab I clicked on PulseAudio Configuration. There the radio button for “Enable PulseAudio Support” was not checked, so I checked it and hit ok. However, after I rebooted, it was still not enabled, and so I checked it again. But it won’t enable, and even after trying to enable it and hitting ok in yast, when I look at it again, it is not enabled.

Here is the output of some configuration information:

jun@ntmpi:~> rpm -qa *pulse*

Also, I tried to run /usr/sbin/alsa-info.sh and I made a bit of a mistake there. It said that it detected a new version of the alsa-info.sh and should I install it, so I said yes, and it overwrote the file with nothing. So I went to alsa project and downloaded what I thought was the latest version and ran it, and when it uploaded, it did not give me a link for the pastebin site of where it uploaded. So I ran it again and have it here in a text file - should I attach it within code tags? It is pretty long. If you can give me another pastebin site, I can upload it there and you can take a look at it.

In either case, I also have some screen shots here that also give some information. As you can see, kmix is not reading much. When I click on the sound icon in system tray, it shows only the IEC958 without a slider bar (and it disables me being able to hit print screen so I cannot show a screen shot of that one).

Here are the screen shots I have, I hope this helps to figure out what is going on. Thanks to everyone for your time helping.

Just to add this, here is the result of the alsa-info.sh:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/36992266/alsa-info.txt.4D1jv6MqR0

From those images
Particularly this: PicPaste - mixer1-jdx3pj7G.png
Is very confusing when compared with the hwinfo

(Emphasis mine)

This might be the case of the overlooking the obvious – what I think is the problem is that pulseaudio (dameon) is not running. What’s in your system log / dmesg output ?

(Now, barring the fact that this is old info, but) have a look at the 3rd pic found here: freedesktop.org - Software/PulseAudio/Desktops/KDE
Look familar

Pulse audio is not running.

!!Sound Servers on this system
!!----------------------------

Pulseaudio:
      Installed - Yes (/usr/bin/pulseaudio)
      Running - No

While I smelt the burnt gunpowder, you most certainly found the gun … and the barrel is indeed still smoking!!! rotfl!

I have a doubt with the overclocking issue.
Right now I am on an older pentium 4 and overclocked too.
This is is an asus machine. What I noticed in this machine is when overclocked higher than 2.8
The sound stops right from the start and sound card is not detected even if I adjustf the
pci latency timer. I know that the sound doesn’t work from the start because this machine has an audio
that tells when the machine is ready to boot.

Overclocking? I didn’t mention it – and while I didn’t really read that link I posted, skimming/searching it now, I can’t find any mention of overclocking.

However, that said, the information you’ve provided is certainly interesting (and tangential to the issue) and illustrates one of the potential side affects associated with overclocking !

Thanks

YaY, my bad. I misread ovelooking to overclocking. Hehe, at 57 my eyes is not working properly w/out my reading glass. Apology.:’(

Absolutely no worries. I was just surprised/left wondering where the mention of overclocking came from

Well, I figured it out, sort of. Not sure why, but in Yast2, the first
time that I went to hardware>sound>other and selected to enable
pulseaudio, when I closed it and hit ok, and even rebooted the pc, it
did not enable pulseaudio. When I checked it again after reboot, it was
not enabled.

However, after the 2nd reboot, which was last night to this morning,
when I went to check hardware>sound>other>pulseaudio, this time it was
enabled. So, I was able to hear what I needed to hear.

So you were right, pulseaudio was not running. But now it is running

Thanks for helping figure this out!
