hello everyone,
my mic seems to be ‘ON’ all the time and the sound is captured and comes through the speakers/ headphones. for eg: the sound of key strokes are captured by the mic when i type and is heard through the speakers. i hope you guys can help me. the result of /usr/sbin/alsa-info.sh is given below:
What was it like before you updated Tumbleweed to the version 3 kernel?
it was the same i think. but started noticing it recently. i saw this thread in ubuntuforums. will this be useful to me?
[SOLVED] Sound coming through Speakers and Headphones at same time. - Ubuntu Forums](http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1551184)
I don’t know, but wouldn’t advise doing it here as you might lose out on some function you later require!
Your main problem seems to be that the Mic is always on picking up everything around your machine. Is your sound also coming out through speakers when headphones are plugged in? You will find several threads on our [multimedia] forum investigating and solving the latter problem for various machines/audio chips. It often ends up as a kernel/alsa detection and configuration problem requiring a bug report.
I have a similar Intel chip as yours on my notebook (also with C2D T6670), but using a different Codec. Originally, my speakers didn’t turn off with headphones attached until I upgraded the kernel. The problem predated Tumbleweed and also affected other distros using the same or earlier kernel versions. I suggest you run through the following guide while awaiting further advice: SDB:Audio troubleshooting, in particular steps 4 & 5.
Can we assume you installed and tested your machine for sound on standard 11.4 [with its standard version 2 kernel] before upgrading to Tumbleweed? If so, with what result?
sorry for the late reply. yes, sound comes out of the speakers and headphones at the same time. but, it doesnt bother me since the sound coming through the speakers when the headphones are plugged is hardly audible. ‘oldcpu’ had directed me to a tutorial for solving the above problem and it worked out partly. i’m contended with the present situation. its this new issue thats bothering me:(
again sorry for the late reply. actually i havent noticed this issue in “11.4”. not sure if this was present in kernel 2.x or not. anyway, i’ll try out the steps mentioned in the troubleshooting guide and get back. thanks for your support:)
i browsed through the troubleshooting guide. but i got stuck @ SDB:Intel-HDA sound problems - openSUSE . my codec is “VIA VT1708S” but i was unable to find the said codec in In the file /usr/src/KERNEL_VERSION/Documentation/sound/alsa/ALSA-Configuration.txt as instructed. could this be a problem?
I don’t think the absence of your Codec in that file proves a problem, so move on through the guide. My Codec isn’t listed either. Under heading “Module snd-hda-intel”, here it just lists this as the module for Intel HD Audio ICH9, and that should also apply to your chip.
Assuming you are using KMix, did you try Muting the “Internal Audio Analogue Stereo channel” on the “Capture Devices” tab of the mixer panel? Click on the small speaker icon below the scale, and see if that stops your Mic from picking up the sounds.
IT GOT FIXED! i entered the ‘model name’ as it was instructed and restarted the system. but instead of Intel HDA, there was ‘Dummy Output’ and no sound. so i reverted the ‘50-sound.conf’ to its original state and restarted once more. dont know how, but now everything seems normal. i hope it stays that way. thanks a lot for your support “consused”. really appreciate it.
Possibly because THAT guide is out of date and has not been maintained.
The HD-Audio-Models.txt file has a lot of the information that used to be in the ALSA-Configuration.txt file.
But there is not much for the VT1708s, … only this as of 1.0.24 of alsa:
VIA VT17xx/VT18xx/VT20xx
========================
auto BIOS setup (default)
Your welcome. Well done for taking the time to familiarize yourself with the guide and try things - it’s useful experience, and something got reset along the way. I also hope your audio setup continues to work normally.
i have a doubt. when I was using Opensuse 11.4, I had followed the below tutorial to fix my ALSA issue (sound coming out through both speakers and headphones):
SDB:Alsa-update - openSUSE
I had attempted to follow this tutorial when I had the above mic issue, but got stuck at the point where we add repositories (step 1). Those repositories are for 11.4 right? do we have any such repository for Tumbleweed?
Having read that tutorial, it doesn’t mention Tumbleweed so one must assume it’s not for Tumbleweed users who should be on the latest stable versions of ALSA and the kernel. BTW, have you fully updated on Tumbleweed (upgrades and downgrades)? Your signature suggests you are not re kernel 3.0.1-40 and KDE 4.6.5 “release 4”.
I very much doubt there would be such a repo for Tumbleweed, as it would be at the “openSUSE Factory” level and considered unstable. You would then NOT be running Tumbleweed and “on your own”.

my Tumbleweed is updated. sorry, i forgot to update my signature. its 3.0.1-40-desktop.
also, the mic issue has come up again>:(. there has been no change to my system (i mean no upgrades/ downgrades) since yesterday. but today when i switched it on, mic is ON! dont understand the cause of this problem. i tried manually adding the sound card but couldn’t find VIA 1708S, so tried many others including ICH9 but i get the following error message:
what to do guys?
The cause of that is typically due to the /etc/modprobe.d/50-sound.conf file being inappropriate.
OK, but are you really on KDE 4.6.5 “release 5”? I am fully updated on Tumbleweed including package downgrades, and mine is showing “release 4”.
i tried adding “model” to 50-sound.conf as oldcpu had advised. here is the screenshot:
SUSE Paste
i added “model=auto” at the end of the first line after a space. but it broke my alsa. i had to reinstall alsa to get my sound back.

sorry it is “release 4”, my mistake:shame:
I don’t think the syntax of the 50-sound.conf works that way. Instead one should NOT change the existing lines, but instead add the following NEW line to the FRONT of the /etc/modprobe.d/50-sound.conf file:
options snd-hda-intel model=auto
save the change. Restart alsa (rebooting may be the easiest way) and test.
