sound disappeared after one of latest updates - SUSE 11.2 / on P4C800

I have Pentium 4 system with P4C800 Deluxe MB; 3GB RAM
with ADI AD 1985 6-channel audio CODEC on it

the sound was in place, but after some of installed updates it has disappeared
any driver/device re-installation/re-configuration activities were not successful
mixer shows all sets are on maximum and nothing is on mute.
How I could get the sound back on my setup?
it is SUSE 11.2 / 32bit

I would like to try help, but I’m a bit “thick” when it comes to understanding these problems and I need lots of detail. Please, can you provide the information recommended to be provided in the 2nd half of the multimedia stickie:
Welcome to multimedia sub-area - openSUSE Forums
ie

please post in this … sub-forum, providing in your post the following information:

  • provide the URLs (of a summary webpage) that are created by running the diagnostic script noted here:
SDB:AudioTroubleshooting - openSUSE - Script to run to obtain detailed information. On openSUSE-11.1 and newer that will ask you to run the script /usr/sbin/alsa-info.sh and after the script finishes it will give you a URL to pass to the support personnel. Please post here the output URL. Just the URL. You may need to run that script twice (the first time with root permissions to update in the /usr/sbin directory, and the second time to get the URL).
  • in a terminal, or xterm, or konsole, type: rpm -qa ‘alsa#and post output here
  • in a terminal, or xterm, or konsole, type: rpm -qa ‘pulse#and post output here
  • in a terminal, or xterm, or konsole, type: rpm -q libasound2 #and post output here
  • in a terminal, or xterm, or konsole, type: uname -a #and post output here
  • for openSUSE-11.1 or earlier, in a terminal, or xterm, or konsole, type: cat /etc/modprobe.d/sound #and post output here
  • for openSUSE-11.2 or later, in a terminal, or xterm, or konsole, type: cat /etc/modprobe.d/50-sound.conf #and post output here

hi oldcpu,

my apology for being bad in asking.
i am not Linux guru and while searching the problem i was also very frustrated receiving that “advertisement” type of information from Google, but not the info I was hoping for.
this forum was a last haven.

i did execute what you are asking for

cat /etc/modprobe.d/50-sound.conf

options snd slots=snd-intel8x0
# W60f.Gpw6SvtFY3D:P4P800 Mainboard
alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0

in reality the my motherboard is a bit different, but the codec installed on it is the same as on P4P800

in regards to the output of the
/usr/sbin/alsa-info.sh

it has generated >80Kb of text and it is too big to be posted into the reply
i have no right to post the attachment in this forum
if you could allow me to do so (at least for the time-being) - i would post it.

once again many thanks for the willingness to help - very much appreciated

The /usr/sbin/alsa-info.sh if you select SHARE/UPLOAD should upload the information to a web site, and give you a URL. Just pass here the URL. Just the URL.

If for some reason that does not work for you, then please run it with the no-upload option:

/usr/sbin/alsa-info.sh --no-upload

which will create the file /tmp/alsa-info.txt. Open that file with a text editor and copy it and paste it to a pastebin site such as PasteBin.be and then press “dump” (in this example) and it will give you a URL. Please post the URL here. Just the URL.

Please also provide the remainder of the information requested, because you have omitted other information.

yep, i did not realize the upload result (did not know that it is so automated)

when I’ve tried to re-configure the card it gives much more

ok … thanks.

You HAVE to re-configure the card, and hence the 1st one is mostly useless.

The second one suggests you may have your audio muted in your mixer.

!!Amixer output

You have many other controls in your mixer that I do not understand , such as:

Simple mixer control ‘Downmix’,0
Capabilities: enum
Items: ‘Off’ ‘6 -> 4’ ‘6 -> 2’
Item0: ‘Off’

the first upload was useless - I’ve guessed it, was just not sure.
it was a reason for the second upload.
one of controls in the mixer is muted by default - upload was caught right after the re-configuration.
but if I move the mixer up - it does not change anything. system stays silent.
maybe there is one volume control, which is not visible - I’ve made visible all possible controls and all stay on max level now - no effect.
moved all volumes to 100% - new upload.
http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=0b0ed62bb8f1375988d92d9e682715b1bcccd48e
may be I’ve overseen something over there - would be glad to have it happening.

Items: 'Off' '6 -> 4' '6 -> 2'

it is about the down-mix from 6 to 4 or to 2 channels
no effect from this so far (I have just two small powered speakers connected to the system)

I can’t see anything wrong there. Can you check your cabling? Do you have sound from any other operating system/distribution at this time?

this is exactly the problem i have
everything looks fine, cabling is ok.
another partition with old distro works fine
could it be that signal goes into S/PDIF out port (just switchesd into it)? I have one o the back panel, but it was newer used on this MB

Looking at the number of pulse apps, this looks like a gnome setup. Hence could be a pulse audio problem.

Still. … What are you using as as speaker test?

i did try to use
aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/test.wav
ecasound -i test.wav -o alsa,hw:0,0
also VLC playing DVD movie
browser from YouTube (it worked so from the beginning)

That aplay is a good test. I assume the file “test.wav” is still there, and you checked ?

VLC and YouTube browser are not good tests, as there could be many non-relevant reasons (to your sound system) as to why they do not work. I take it they do not work now ?

Can you apply any “cause and effect” as to EXACTLY when your sound stopped working? Could it be exactly when you did a 2.6.31.12-0.1-desktop kernel update? You can type:

rpm -qa --last > myrpms.txt

and open myrpms.txt with a text editor to see exactly when you installed various rpms.

the exact point of time was missed.
this PC is used mainly for mailing & news type of activities, some communities.
music is nice to have option, but far from main one.

i did the query for the packages:

cat myrpms.txt

i guess there should be something within this timeframe
does something sound strange for you?

wav file is there and system plays it for sometime - just there is no music out of speakers ;-(

after your hint about the pulseaudio i did search in the net
what I’ve seen so far
my warn log has following lines:

Mar 7 12:16:21 hostxx01 rtkit-daemon[2933]: Failed to make ourselves RT: Invalid argument
Mar 7 13:16:34 hostxx01 pulseaudio[3035]: pid.c: Daemon already running.
Mar 7 13:16:34 hostxx01 pulseaudio[2931]: ratelimit.c: 2 events suppressed
Mar 7 13:16:37 hostxx01 pulseaudio[3045]: pid.c: Daemon already running.

first line of it was mentioned in several bugs where the pulseauido gets “disconnected”
could it be the same and if so - what i may or should do?

more from log file:

checking the log once again I’ve realize that pulseaudo was updated recently

pulseaudio-0.9.21-1.1.1 Fri 26 Feb 2010 07:31:36 PM CET
before that i had version from SUSE dvd pulseaudio-0.9.19
another question
do i need to have zeroconf from pulseaudio up and running?

Other than very basic theory, I have no practical experience with pulse audio.

A long shot : Did you check under Configure Desktop > Multimedia, to see if the audio selections there match the same order of device/settings that are in YaST > Hardware > Sound

it looks quite similar
Configure Desktop > Multimedia → Music
it has 4 items in it:

  • Intel ICH5 with AD1985 (Intel ICH5)
  • default
  • hw:0.0
  • hw:0,4

and in the YaST2 it is:
Card Configuration P4P800 Mainboard
driver snd-intel8x0
in edit mode it is AC’97 codec…

as i’ve mentioned earlier. it is Asus p4c800 MB, but the audio codec should be the same

You could try updating alsa to see if that helps (another long shot).

For openSUSE-11.2, there is some guidance here:
Alsa-update - openSUSE

Note that while the “zypper ar” and “zypper rr” commands will work in that guide, the "zypper install … " may not properly install the alsa rpms, and hence of "zypper install … " I recommend you install the updated alsa rpms via yast > software > software management (and not via zypper).

Be certain not only to update your installed alsa apps (and libasound2) but also install the alsa-driver-kmp-desktop for the 2.6.31.12 kernel.

You will need to reboot after updating alsa

I have two kernels installed
openSUSE 11.2 - 2.6.31.12-0.1 (pae)
openSUSE 11.2 - 2.6.31.12-0.1 (desktop)

i did patched first one - no impact.
sound is still missing

Ahh … if you had told me that before I would not have recommended updating alsa.

Perhaps then just roll back to the version that comes with openSUSE-11.2.
