Sound configuration

Guys,
I have a speaker that I plug into the headphone jack. I can’t find any controls for it. Initially it wasn’t making any sound so I went into a thing called alsamixer and fumbled around. The problem seems to be that the soundcard is set to default rather than my soundcard. When I select that I get more outlets including headphones. I “activated” them and it worked. Unfortunately that seems temporary. How do I get sound through my soundcard? Once I’ve done that I assume all the channels will appear in the sound settings.
I found a solution (?) which talks about YAST and YAST2. I didn’t think slowroll uses YAST?

When you want that people take a serious look into this, you better start a thread in the most appropriate section (multimedia?).

Install and use pavucontrol

How many completely different topics have been discussed in this one thread? I lost count.

Please don’t be so lazy; at least give it an honest try to find a problem solution on the web. Search engines and their AI give amazing results these days. I just literally pasted your new question into Google and added “on openSUSE Leap 16.0”, and I got results. Why didn’t you try that first?

If this doesn’t give any useful results, please open a new thread for a new problem rather than turning an existing thread into a neverending story.

Shundhammer, when did you first start using Linux, and or, OpenSuse? I’m completely new to it and trying to express my experience as a newcomer to installing the system. It has been going great thanks to the help and support on this thread. I do NOAIDUCKDUCKGO search for solutions but they are a minefield of old and sometimes too involved answers. You, perhaps being an experienced “Expert” user may be able to resolve this stuff. But me…not so easily.
You have called me lazy and dishonest from behind your screen. Take a look at yourself. You don’t have to participte or read this thread.

I’ve moved your question to a new topic, as that is the best way to get help for particular issues or questions.

You now also mentioned…

Are you using Leap 16 or Slowroll now?

I’m using slowroll. I’ve installed pavucontrol but I can’t see a way to select and use my sound card(?) as default.

This is what I have when I type Pavu in the search field…

Looks like what I had under sound already, but I did the whole sudo zypper install pavucontrol and it did it’s thing.

Sorry, this has nothing to do with how long you’ve been using Linux. It doesn’t matter if you come from the Windows world, from the Mac world, or from Beteigeuze: The method of obtaining information in the 21st century has been the same for all systems.

First, you do a web research. Admittedly this was not so easy 20 years ago, but times have changed; and in this area we can all benefit a lot from AI. It’s so deeply embedded into the search engines that you don’t even have to do anything special.

In the olden days it was also expected that people read a book or some online documentation; I don’t even go this far. Good books on modern computing are hard to come by, and online documentation is fragmented so much that it’s a pain to use.

Please accept that experts are a rare resource, even less experts who are willing to share their knowledge. It’s important that this privilege is not over-used for trivial things that are easy to answer with standard means such as using a search engine.

Well, you found the solution, please show me the answer.

I can link the speaker via bluetooth, but that is different to making my soundcard default, I expect.

Is this really how you want to encourage new users?

Then this thread should not be tagged “leap-16” (plus any future threads :+1: )

Please, cool down. You may have to play around with pavucontrol. Is the “400 Series” the “soundcard”? Specially look at the bottom item

Is the screenshot above pavucontrol? It isn’t labelled as such. I guess it must be, when I type pavucontrol into konsole the standard sound “app” opens.

So in alsmixer, I get this…

It is. Is the external speaker plugged in?
And, the behaviour ( saw you posting ) is normal. You can start any application from Konsole.

BTW. You can also do all this from Systemsettings. Type “Sound” in the search field and it will show you the module.

F6 and…

Go to the middle option and this

Forget about alsamixer for now, please.
