Sound config help

Heres one for you,

My frend got some wierd hardware combination and our lack of experience makes a perfect combination :stuck_out_tongue:

The main problem is making Amarok to play sound…

We installed new driver on his creative x-fi (PCI) and it works,
KDE sounds work on x-fi but phonon can see 2 more devices:

c-media keyboard ( a wierd keyboard with a hedset like a phone for skype witch has a speaker)
withot the x-fi driver it was the default sound output so amarok is stil playing on it

radeon graphics rotfl!
He has radeon hd2600 AGP
That has to be the worst hardware ever by ati
The card is butchered, its a PCI-E backported on AGP so ati driver is a nother topic :X

I tried to configure the default sond device via yast and hardware>sound modul can only see radeon sound device, not even the keyboard witch plays sound?!

Kmix can “see” all 3 devices and volume levels.

So the question again is how to make Amarok play on the creative device?

PC:
some 32bit intel p4 D HT (dual core)
asus p4s800d-e
ati HD2600 AGP

thanks

If basic sound works, then amarok should also work. Note that the amarok packaged by Novell/SuSE-GmbH is crippled for proprietary audio codecs, where such codecs (including mp3) make up the majority of codecs. Your best approach in such a case is often to install 3rd party packages to provide the codecs.

I typically recommend users setup their openSUSE software package manager with 4 repositories to facilitate the installation of non-crippled multimedia software and 3rd party packaged codecs. Specifically add OSS, Non-OSS, Update and Packman to one’s software package manager. Just those 4 repositories (repos). No others. None. ONLY add others once one is advanced enough in Linux to understand the risks and incompatibilities that can arise from using other repos, and ONLY if one understands how to work around such problems (which is knowledge WELL BEYOND almost all newbies and many intermediate users). Hence only OSS, Non-OSS, Update and Packman. There is guidance on that here: Repositories - openSUSE-Community Select your repos, and then setup only OSS, Non-OSS, Update and Packman (and NOT videolan).

If using openSUSE-11.1, replace the Novell Packaged libxine1 and amarok with the packman packaged libxine1 and amarok. Also install the packman packaged amarok-packman and the packman packaged amarok-xine. Then launch amarok and select the xine sound engine.

If using openSUSE-11.0 or earlier, remove the Novell xine-lib and at the same time add the Packman packaged libxine1. Apply both those settings at the same time. Then replace the Novell Packaged amarok with the packman packaged amarok. Also install the packman packaged amarok-packman and the packman packaged amarok-xine. Then launch amarok and select the xine sound engine.

mp3 support is working but on the keyboard speaker
while KDE login souds play on the creative sound card

KDE 4.1.3
openSUSE 11.1 32bit

Never the less ill fiddle with codecs and try something

In the Multimedia page in the Personal Settings app there is the
possibility to change the order of the different sound devices for
different situations ( notifications, Communications etc ) you
probably need to set the main Audio Device to the creative card and at the bottom Apply device list To…` tick all so the the sound is
directed through the main choice ( move the creative up to the top if
needed in the right pane).

That should sort it.

No probs, glad to help.

I must admit I had to struggle at first to get my cards configured
right ( still cannot get my Aurilium to work as I would like but that
is another thing ) ;

The juggling of the card order is the gotcha here and can take a bit
of juggling to get it right.
