sort data on physical col 80-84 - How?

Data needs to be sorted on physical cols 80-84 regardless of how many delimiters are before these columns (i.e. spaces, commas, …)

You can do this with the standard sort program. It allows specification of character position in a field for the start and end of the sort key. So specify a field separator that will never happen in the input so that the whole line becomes a single field.

Yes, thank you.

sort -t"{" -k1.80,1.84 current.txt > newcurrent.txt

worked GREAT.

I see this was your first thread on these Forums, thus: Welcome.

I alo see that you got an answer within 7 (seven) minutes. That is amazing even for our high standards

I also see that you were able to put ken_yap’s hint in a working solution in a very short time.

Thus I hope you feel this is the friendly and helpfull place we hope it is.
