Sorry to say, but OS11 is crap!

On every computer i try to install OS11, it always end up in serious problems.

First i tried OS11 64bits on Dell Latitude D830 with Core2Duo CPU and NVidia NV140.
Almost nothing work. No java, no flash, no sound. And nothing of this was able to install and if i try Intel wlan 3950, it freeze.

Now i format drive and install 32bits version. It install and now im been waiting for 3hours to finish all updates. Well first if i try to connect to WLAN, everything stopp working. Only mousepointer is still alive but everything else doesnt respond.

Now i’m connectet to LAN and run updates and this has been going for 3hours and still running. Every 10sec it stops and complain about “illigal page”, PANIC, “Invalig argument”, “Fatal error, run database recovery”, “PANIC: fatal region error detected” etc etc etc

I click Try again, but it want continue so i click Ignore to go a little more until next PANIC.

Another Dell Latitude D520 with ATi Radeon mobile Xpress 1270, it install but KDE3.5 is completly messed up. It refuse to boot in failsafe and does only work in init 3.

Can anyone explain to me what is wrong with OS11? OS10.3 run without any problem on every computer i try!

Well during i write this message, update finnished and i try to run Firefox. The whole laptop freeze again. Only mousepointer work!
And after forced reboot only GRUB comes up.

openSUSE 11.0 should work fine on that hardware (I have openSUSE 11.0 running on both the Dell laptops you mention).

Two things:

  1. have you tested your download against the MD5 codes to make sure it’s ok? And also have you tested the CD/DVD you used to install?

  2. Don’t install with KDE 4.0 (this is a preview version and far from stable).

Next to these two points, always apply the updates after install. There is a kernel update that is of importance in openSUSE 11.0 when using a reiserfs filesystem as also a Beagle update… these two are known to cause freeze/hang issue (openSUSE 11.0 specific) and need to be updated!

With an updated install I’ve been running openSUSE 11.0 steadily on enough desktops and a couple of servers… no issues here, so it is possible!

I wonder if you skipped over any of the good advice in the entire thread
beginning at http://tinyurl.com/3vwrzl ?

By the way, the writer of that thread named it “NEWBIES - Suse-11.0
Pre-installation Preparation - PLEASE READ”, but personally I find it to be
GREAT info for even non-newbies, such as yourself.

On the other hand, wait a few days and install 11.1–we ALL hope it is a more
painless install which needs a MUCH shorter list of info on how to get it done.

Well i hope you all understand that i was a little frustrated when i write my message?

I reinstall OS11 and this time i ditch RaiserFS and go for ext3. This because i remember Raiser is no longer supported. I also choose NOT automatic configuration and i now manage to download all updates during installation.

Now its up and running, but it fail to install my soundcard that is a very standard Intel 82801H HD Audio Controller. I run ALSACONF but i could not find any supported PnP card. What do i do to fix sound?

Did you configure the card in YaST/Hardware/Sound?

This kind of offensive nonsense goes nowhere with adults.

Try: Additional YaST Package Repositories - openSUSE and page down to “Dell”. I think you need their drivers, etc at those links.

BTW, don’t blame openSuSE (which is built to spec) when the OEM produces a system optimized for vista starting at the BIOS and all it’s tables. At least Dell has provided solutions;) Others, like mine, have not.

Oh come on, asterisks help to release some steam

Glad it’s working. By the way, please don’t condemn something as being “crap” just because it doesn’t work for you. You wouldn’t have 15,000+ members here if the software didn’t work at all.

Now its up and running, but it fail to install my soundcard that is a very standard Intel 82801H HD Audio Controller. I run ALSACONF but i could not find any supported PnP card. What do i do to fix sound?

You are much more likely to get meaningful help (and you’ll help keep these forums orderly and useful to others) if you post this to the appropriate sub-forum (Applications -> Multimedia). Most of the sound-savy members hang out there.

Have a lot of fun!

Hi everybody!
Now my sound is also working fine. A reboot fix everything!

I want to say that im very sorry to use bad language! I was very frustrated since i fail to install OS11 on 3 different laptop. The one i use now (Acer TM4001WLMi) freeze very early during installation, but now it runs again with 10.3

Can anyone confirm that there is an issue using ReiserFS in OS11?
Why do OS10.3 run flawless and OS11 freeze everything during installation?

Why do OS10.3 run flawless and OS11 freeze everything during installation?

Maybe media and a picky reader?

to the O/P
I use suse 11.0 on most of my machines:-
4 x IBM Thinkcentre M50s - No problems
“Custom” PC (AMD 2400XP, random sticks of ram, NV 6200GFX) - No problems
Dell Latitude D630 (using it now) - no problems, even wifi “just works”

I also run it at work on various pcs, NO PROBLEMS!

I can appreciate your frustration but it does sound like a bad media rather then anything - i had a similar problem, it refused point blank to install GRUB, tried another DVD and it worked a treat, binned the old copy and problem solved.

OS11 is not crap, KDE4 is crap … but that’s a different thread  GOOD LUCK!!

Yes, there was an issue with ReiserFS in OS11 that caused systems to freeze.

For the record, usage of the ReiserFS was a good deal when Linux had no other
journaling file systems - it was painful to sit through a full ext2 fsck after a
crash, even with the relatively small disks of the day. Now that ext3 is in the
kernel, there is an option.

This will likely start a flame war, but I recommend not using ReiserFS any more.
The reason is that it is not widely used. For every ReiserFS user, there are
thousands of ext3 users, thus it is a lot less likely for bugs to be in released
kernels.

I would not gladly stay with suse for five years if it is a crap.
I am already a crap, why should I partner to another crap;)

Hmmn, probaly it is a crap as the saying goes birds of the same feather flocks together…

Well Ronny, glad you have it sorted!!

Just to bring one more comment to level:

KDE 4.0 (<-emphases on the .0!!) is unstable… But the current 4.1/4.2 branch is doing quite nicely and getting better with every release!

Let’s keep a positive tone here people!! …What do you say? YES SIR!!! DrillSargent!!

Seriously though! Give things time to evolve!! (And where you can, lend a helping hand).
Think about it… The user-friendly end of Linux has only been running 5 or 6 years now. Others have been going +20 years. Look how far it’s already come!
My view is: Give it another 3/4 and the major Linux distros should be on par with other competitors. That’s for getting a broad user base. As far as I’m concerned it’s already a rock steady product.

Ok… I’ll get off my soapbox now! (opes… not meaning to get this thread moved!)

Cheers,
Wj

Magic31, thanks for pointing that out - i have not tried any other 4.x KDE other then 4.0 so perhaps now .1 and .2 is going, i might give it another whirl.

So I installed OpenSuse 11 on a Core2Deo, 2GB, 500Gb Machine. Ever since I have installed it I spend 6 hours a day trying to fix the silliest of things.

1 NIC onboard wont configure
2 NIC on PCI will not work on reboot, I have to goto yast finger around and it works.
First install KDE shows a fancy transparent folder of my Desktop. And all of a sudden disappears.
Graphics card advanced features wont work
I have to read multiple posts on the internet to fix things, documentation is sooo standard and useless.
And now, latest hit, my task bar disappears.

I have had it. I am going to invest my time exploring Fedora or Ubuntu. The last thing Suse will do for me is download these ISO’s and burn them on DVD’s.

Btw The default mov and mpeg player wont play the files, it needs to download some codex. Why Why… these are the oldest of formats on this planet. Why not just make it work out of the box.

Out of 2 CD burning utilities provided 1 ones not work.

UI is so crappy, just does not work.

Overall a very unstable, unreliable release of OpenSuse.

2 weeks and I have wasted my time.

Btw all the problems I have mentioned are expected in a out of the box product.

Sid

You should’ve installed 11.1 as it rolled out support for various new devices (including new chip types, LAN/WLAN cards and so forth).

KDE 4 that shipped with 11.0 was very immature and raw, 4.2.2 and forward seem to have some potential in them.

You right clicked and removed it.

Judging by your name I’ll guess you’re from India and as such we have different laws here in the west. MPEG is heavily patented and as such cannot legally be included with the distribution - it would open a can of worms and make every user and the parent company a target for a lawsuit.

Well if they’re expected, why complain about them?

Ah so it does work for somethings

Bye

Mind the door on the way out.

I’d recommend openSUSE 11.1 KDE4 reloaded as it has KDE 4.2.2 plus other updates. You can download it here:
