Sometimes I click on things and nothing happens.

Hey, I realize this is kind of vague but just ask me for more information if you need it.

Ive noticed this in 2 places specifically.

The first is when I try to open the only “tarball” program Ive ever tried to install, Celtx. I unpacked the program into my bin folder, and when clicking (or double clicking) on either the executable file or the shell script nothing happens. If I double click on shell script, and then on the executable, I get an error saying “celtx is already running but not responding. To open a new window you must first close the existing celtx process, or restart your computer”.

The second time is when I get a notice on my screen about new security updates available. I click on it, and it opens up the “software update” window with the updates it wants to install already checked. I click “install updates” and nothing happens. If I click the help button, it gives me an error “failed to execute child process “gnome-help””. Im guessing this one is because Im not using gnome, but XFCE. If I open up online update using yast, I can update from there and install these files fine.

So basically the second problem is not that big of a deal, since Im able to install the files from a different area. Its just annoying and I dont know if it means there is a deeper bug in my system. The first problem makes me unable to run a program I really wan to run, so thats the one I really need the most help with.

I’m running 11.2 with XFCE

You should really do the install from the command line. Is this a binary or a source file?

i suggest you join a Celtx forum and ask there about those
problems…i’ve never heard of it before and doubt if many here have
any knowledge of how it is install…

did you find and follow the install instructions? if so my guess is
their instructions need rewriting or expanding…(just guessing)

when you say nothing happens do you mean the window with the button
“install updates” stays visible? or that window disappears and then it
seems like nothing happens? if the latter it may well be doing its
thing in the background…Linux is a multi-user, multi-threaded,
multi-processed system and unlike some other operating systems you may
be used to it is very seldom it show you a “WAIT i’m bysy” hourglass…

yep, the YaST system is a Gnome based system…it will run in XFCE (i
guess, i’ve never actually tried) but it sure doesn’t seem like you
have install the Gnome help system…so, without that it won’t work…

on the other hand there is a openSUSE wiki with all kinds of info on
both YaST and the openSUSE Online Updater…

> If I open up

some folks here just shut down the updater do it the you describe all
the time… once a week is usually often enough to seek security patches…

as mentioned i suspect either you didn’t follow the applications
install instructions or the instructions themselves need
attention…and, i doubt you will find any Celtx gurus here…

if their forum is no help, come back…maybe some kind soul here will
go to the trouble of installing Celtx so they can help you…(i won’t
because i don’t run either XFCE or 11.2, so what i see and what you
see may be too far apart for me to be so helpful…)

for celtx (looks nice by the way) can you try doing:

open a console (terminal/command prompt) and once you have one do this:

cd /path/to/where/you/put/celtx/
./celtx-bin

See what errors it spits out. Also your ~/.xsession-errors file is a good place to look for problems (~/ is /home/you/ - not sure how much you know about command line stuff).

krizman@linux-uzs0:/home> cd /home/krizman/bin/celtx
krizman@linux-uzs0:~/bin/celtx> ./celtx-bin
./celtx-bin: error while loading shared libraries: libjemalloc.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Also your ~/.xsession-errors file is a good place to look for problems (~/ is /home/you/ - not sure how much you know about command line stuff).

Im very new to linux, and know next to none of the commands, thanks for spelling it out for me. But Im afraid you’ll have to spell it out a little clearer, I cant seem to get that command to run:

krizman@linux-uzs0:~/bin/celtx> cd…
krizman@linux-uzs0:~/bin> cd…
krizman@linux-uzs0:~> .xsessions-errors
If ‘.xsessions-errors’ is not a typo you can use command-not-found to lookup the package that contains it, like this:
cnf .xsessions-errors
krizman@linux-uzs0:~> ./xsessions-errors
bash: ./xsessions-errors: No such file or directory
krizman@linux-uzs0:~> .xsessions
If ‘.xsessions’ is not a typo you can use command-not-found to lookup the package that contains it, like this:
cnf .xsessions
krizman@linux-uzs0:~> cd /home/krizman/.xsessions-error
bash: cd: /home/krizman/.xsessions-error: No such file or directory
krizman@linux-uzs0:~> cd /home/krizman/.xsessions
bash: cd: /home/krizman/.xsessions: No such file or directory
krizman@linux-uzs0:~> cd /home/krizman/.xsessions-error file
bash: cd: /home/krizman/.xsessions-error: No such file or directory

PALLADIUM:

The window stays visible. It doesnt run in the background because sometimes I just click it and go do something else when it doesnt work, or it will pop up later telling me it wants to install it again.

Also, I’ll take up your seuggestion of checking out the celtx forums.

GOGALTHORP: It was a tarball file, once “unpacked” if that is the right term the program is an executable bin file, named “celtx-bin”. If you know of a link that shows me how to do tarballs from the command line I’ll give it a shot.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

Hi
The command is ./celtx not ./celtx-bin. If you wait a bit, I’m
currently packaging it up on the build service for you to install as an
rpm.

Hi
Here you go, just download the rpm for your system i586=32bit or
x86_64=64bit
http://software.opensuse.org/search?baseproject=openSUSE%3A11.2&p=1&q=celtx

Change to the download directory and install via;

sudo rpm -Uhv celtx*

Or right-click on it and let the package manager install. I created a
desktop entry and used one of their logo icons, so a menu item should
appear.

Hey, thanks for going through the trouble to put that RPM together for me. Im going to try and install it in a minute…should I be uninstalling the original Celtx program I installed?

Also, I ran the correct command (./celtx) and here are the results. Prepare yourself for waves of gobbeldygook/information

OK, I have installed the rpm file, it went in a slightly different directly. However, trying to open the newly installed program in File Manager gives me the exact same problems as before…except this time I seem to get a little bit of hour glass action as the computer thinks about it for a bit. But nothing happens and when I try it again, I get the same error as before “Celtx is already running…etc.”

Trying to run it from the terminal also seems to get a similar error as above:

Hi
Bother! I just realized I built the test on a 11.1 VM :frowning: I see there
is a bug on the celtx forum.
http://forums.celtx.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=13215

I’ve downloaded the full src and having a play around with that at the
moment.

Ok, well at least I know its not my retardness that is keeping this from working. Dont worry about building another rpm file, I’ll just wait around until they fix they bug, its no big deal. Just have to use old paper and pen for now :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks for all your help.
