Somehow I cannot get sound on my newly installed opensuse 11.3, KDE 64 bit

OK, then looking at the output of the rpm commands:

Clearly you have some pulse audio libraries installed, but your PC does not have the application “pulseaudio”.

The same is true for my 64-bit openSUSE PC.

In some respects the implementation of pulse audio was not sufficiently mature, so for KDE at least, it is not fully installed by default. Experience is on average this approach of not having pulseaudio installed by default in KDE yields more reliable audio behaviour.

Mmm, but then what could I do now? None of the multimedia applications can play a cd without hanging every odd second. Could it be the installment I made of the items from packman and VLC as per the multimedia guide that is faulty? Or is it the missing pulseaudio?

Why do you keep saying VLC ? Does this happen with VLC ?

Also, you clearly did not install this as per the multimedia guide, as the multimedia guide tells you to disable to remove the videolan repos, yet you clearly stated:

Its NOT a good idea (to have the VLC with Packman).

I recommend you replace EVERY package (except libdvdcss) that you installed from the videolan repository with the Packman packaged equivalent.

Since you did not follow the guide, I do not know what the configuration could be for your multimedia.

Actually I did not install anything else except libdvdcss, not to my knowledge, since I did follow the guide as best as I could.

How about checking to be certain ?

Mmm

I took a screenshot of Yast, show repositories,

this is vlc
http://www.imagebam.com/image/79025d95460437

After that I deleted the repository, - that I did a bit late because I was not sure if it did harm.

This is same way, packman
ImageBam - Fast, Free Image Hosting and Photo Sharing

and this is
packman

Ahh, sorry that was 2 x packman

Here is the screenshot of vlc

Clearly you have videolan packaged apps OTHER than libdvdcss installed.

How about searching for, and replacing those with Packman packaged equivalent apps ?

Odd, because I did follow the guide. (But maybe because I did not remove the repository right away?)

But I will do that. Could you give me advise on how i best might search for them? - using bash? (And which command could be good to use?) Or yast?

You mean searching each item on the ImageBam - Fast, Free Image Hosting and Photo Sharing, deleting them? And finding similar in packman?

Might a way be to remove all from vlc, then reinstall libdvdcss, then remove the repositoty again, and then to check that all the things from packman listed in the media guide is installed?

(the only other things I have installed apart costum installation, and the multimedia is wine and also at one time i tried to open something (photo/stream) in firefox, and the system asked if i wanted it to get software for doing it, i clicked yes.)

Yes of course. The guide is vERY clear to remove the repository right away. If you did not do that, then you did not follow the guide.

If you are using KDE this is easy. There is a selection in YasT Software Management to switch all packages to a given repository packager.

Yes I can see that now.

With the chance of trying your patience, “There is a selection in YasT Software Management to switch all packages to a given repository packager”, - but I fail to find how I do that.

But I can do it this way also as listed below, no?

What I need to do is remove the vlc packages, reinstall libdvdcss, then remove the repository again and just make sure that all items to install from the guide in packman is there, right? (I have also considered removing all from packman as well and starting from scratch??)

I know I am a bit daft…

I think there is something that is confusing me, and that is this;

“How about searching for, and replacing those with Packman packaged equivalent apps ?”

“to switch all packages to a given repository packager. ”

Isn’t it so that most of the items in my pc installed from the vlc repository should be simply removed.?
Why should they be switched or replaced?

Take a look at this example:
http://thumbnails26.imagebam.com/9553/195b7e95522578.jpg](ImageBam)

Thats applicable to the KDE4 YaST, but not to the Gnome YaST.

The videolan packagers make no effort to ensure their packaged applications work with Packman packaged applications, and the Packman packagers also do not make the effort to ensure their packaged applications work with the Videolan packaged applications.

The result being if one has multimedia apps installed in a mix from both repositories, there can be unexpected effects.

Ok, I see, I think I understand.

And I use KDE4 as well, - and i just checked; yes in yast, under the packman repository I also have this line.
So all I need to do is do a mouse click on that, and I do not have to delete the files from the former vlc repository, right?

The philosophy is to replace them with Packman packaged equivalents. So with the Packman repository selected, as in the example screen shot I provided, select “Switch System packages to the versions in this repository (packman)”

Ok, I see, - and learn a lot by the way. Will do.

So I only clicked that, clicked accept, and it did a lot of work. So that part should be alright now.

Then I restarted.

Now here is the bad part; I just checked the cd player, - it is still the same, it still hangs.

What application is the ‘cd player’ ?
