Some YaST2 Modules won't start

YaST2 seems a bit borked on my computer - it’s a clean install of openSUSE 11.0 from a 32 bit Gnome LiveCD with not much added to it and YaST2 generally doesn’t run. The terminal text based yast version works fine but the nice GUI graphical one usually doesn’t. After entering the root password nothing happens, and running yast2 from the command prompt brings up a YaST2 window but many of the modules don’t appear if clicked, although some do.

How do I find out what’s wrong, and more importantly repair it?

Many thanks.

B-b-bump…

Still having this problem - yast starts fine from the command line in a terminal and works well. yast2 does not start from the start control panel, but from the command line the main yast2 window appears but none of the controls work. I have managed to uninstall all Yast packages and reinstall them with zypper in yast2-* but still the same results - yast2 does not work.

IIRC (but I could be wrong) there have been some other threads here with that or something very similar, installing from the Gnome Live-CD.

I would think that reinstalling yast2* would do it, too. Perhaps you need to reinstall the patterns, which can also be done with zypper (see the man page). You could just go for all the relevant patterns, which would be “base system”, “enhanced base system”, “yast system administration”, “yast installation packages”, and “gnome base system”. Admittedly a shotgun approach, but since you aren’t getting any helpful errors messages at the command line to point to something specific, this would pull in everything and hence anything missing/repair anything broken.

Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful.

Thanks for the reply - any help is appreciated. It seems it’s a more subtle problem than I first figured. Sometimes (like today) YaST2 starts, sometimes (like yesterday) it doesn’t. Apart from concluding that I should bettter do computer configuration tasks on a Thursday than on a Wednesday I don’t know what to think.

Are there any YaST2 log messages to look out for? I found /var/log/YaST2/y2log but can’t see anything in it that looks interesting.

Perhaps check the X Server logs, or when the problem occurs Ctrl-Alt-F10?

Mine does the same on my work system. But at home it is fine. I installed via the openSUSE 11.0 DVD. Running 32-bit Gnome here. My fix to start Yast2 when it won’t launch… is to just reload the desktop via ctrl + alt + backspace. Then Yast2 loads up… it does not make much sense. Hope that helps.
