Some Problems with MSI CX61

Hi,

I have used opensuse for a couple of years on Desktop machines. I have got an MSI CX61 recently and installed OpenSuse 13.1 on that with KDE desktop. I have a couple of issues with SuSe which I hope I can tackle them with your help:

  1. My first problem is my graphic card. I have a nVidia GeForce GT 720M installed on this laptop. This is what i see as output of lspci:

00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v3/4th Gen Core Processor DRAM Controller (rev 06)
00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v3/4th Gen Core Processor PCI Express x16 Controller (rev 06)
00:01.1 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v3/4th Gen Core Processor PCI Express x8 Controller (rev 06)
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 06)
00:03.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v3/4th Gen Core Processor HD Audio Controller (rev 06)
00:14.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 8 Series/C220 Series Chipset Family USB xHCI (rev 05)
00:16.0 Communication controller: Intel Corporation 8 Series/C220 Series Chipset Family MEI Controller #1 (rev 04)
00:1a.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 8 Series/C220 Series Chipset Family USB EHCI #2 (rev 05)
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 8 Series/C220 Series Chipset High Definition Audio Controller (rev 05)
00:1c.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 8 Series/C220 Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port #1 (rev d5)
00:1c.3 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 8 Series/C220 Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port #4 (rev d5)
00:1c.5 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 8 Series/C220 Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port #6 (rev d5)
00:1d.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 8 Series/C220 Series Chipset Family USB EHCI #1 (rev 05)
00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation HM86 Express LPC Controller (rev 05)
00:1f.2 SATA controller: Intel Corporation 8 Series/C220 Series Chipset Family 6-port SATA Controller 1 [AHCI mode] (rev 05)
00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corporation 8 Series/C220 Series Chipset Family SMBus Controller (rev 05)
01:00.0 3D controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF117M [GeForce 610M/710M / GT 620M/625M/630M/720M] (rev a1)
04:00.0 Ethernet controller: Qualcomm Atheros AR8161 Gigabit Ethernet (rev 10)
05:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8723AE PCIe Wireless Network Adapter

As you can see, I have:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 06)

and:

01:00.0 3D controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF117M [GeForce 610M/710M / GT 620M/625M/630M/720M] (rev a1)

but what my system uses is not nVidia, its Intel integrated processor.
I have downloaded nVidia drivers and installed them, also pointed my VGA on startup to nvidia but start x fails and i had to roll it back to Intel. So how can I use nVidia on this?

  1. I have a couple of networks that I have to connect each time which have different networks and different subnet masks (e.g. 192.168.x.x and 129.240.8.x), how can I add a “sub-ip” to my network via KDE network manager? I know the traditional system of ifup and ifconfig, but I really prefer to have this on Network Manager rather than ifup.

  2. When I am playing some video on MPlayer, SMPlayer or (my favorite) Kaffeine, sometimes there is a “break” on the displayed video. I remember I had this issue on Ubuntu and when I updated my graphic card, it was resolved. Does this relate to my graphic card again? Or it might be something else?

  3. I have killed myself to find farsi input keyboard on kde, but the only option is arabic. I have installed whatever farsi package I could find on Repository Manager, but no luck. Have they developed the input under KDE at all?

Thank you all, looking forward to hear from you.
And, by the way, if none of the above gets fixed, I’m still going to use this. I really admire SuSe for its stabiliity! Long Live SuSe!!

First problem is that your system is an Optimus one, you’ll have to use Bumblebee to get Nvidia work, there’s a guide here http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA_Bumblebee . First you must uninstall the Nvidia driver completly, rerun the installer with option --uninstall. In addition you’ll have to reinstall the package xorg-x11-server.
About Iranian keyboard layouts, I looked into my system, XFCE Swedish translation, Iranian layouts are under Persian there, possibly KDE uses the same list, a little outdated list I suppose.
