Solution for Intel + Nvidia graphics

Every now and then I install tumbleweed and give my intel / nvidia GPU a try. I just tried this: http://opensuse.14.x6.nabble.com/suse-prime-alt-package-now-available-for-Optimus-cards-td5058066.html

Booted to a blank screen after running prime-select nvidia and rebooting. Has anyone successfully gotten an nvidia GPU to work with tumbleweed? I’ve had bumblebee work but that’s not very good. Primusrun would never work for me either but it’s been a while since I tried that.

Hi, you used dated information apparently (Tumbleweed moves so fast…).
suse-prime-alt worked for a while with TW, but is no longer available for current TW, maybe because of unresolvable problems.
suse-prime is still available for Leap 42.2, but has issues too; please see https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/512260-Leap-42-1-Optimus-system-with-nvidia-prime-instead-of-bumblebee for details.

Im thinking about installing Leap 42.1 and trying that… Bad idea?

Leap 42.1 will be maintained until 6 months after 42.2 (May 16th 2017).
So it’s probably better to install 42.2 and to try Bumblebee.

It looks like bumblebee is the way to go! When I try to install suse-prime in 42.2 it tells me “nothing provides x11-video-nvidiaG04”

I am running on my laptop also bumblebee and I am very satisfied with it.
Just follow the ultimate guide I’ve added in my post above. It works flawlessly.

Got it working with glxspheres on leap 42.2. I wonder if this would work with tumbleweed

Edit: nevermind, primusrun wont work… like like the last time I tried. Optirun will work but it’s not that great

Well GIMP and Kmines do work with primusrun…maybe glxspheres is just weird

here is what you need (add the NVIDIA repo for 42.2 to see it in Yast)

http://http.download.nvidia.com/opensuse/leap/42.2/x86_64/x11-video-nvidiaG04-375.26-19.1.x86_64.rpm

Sorry, too late. I’m already rocking and rolling with bumblebee. If bumblebee upsets me I’ll come back to this :D. Thanks

I guess I thought I could install the nvidia driver through software.opensource.org and that would work. Instead I had to add the repository through Yast

OpenSUSE is open source only. Note the name. You need to get any proprietary stuff else where you won’t find it in the official openSUSE repos. .:open_mouth:

I meant software.opensuse.org

Who made that decision? j\k

Well the openSUSE people decided that they would only use open source software thus the name and shipping only open source software. :open_mouth:
