Hi there , we tried to install software for University courses, like Maxima(mathematical Package), Netbeans, etc, with o success,
A university in Portugal developed a Linux for use by students loaded with relevant software, we tried to emulate it on the Opensuse, with no success so far even the Netbeans which in YaSt, didn’t get off! This is a 32 bit version of Suse 11.1, any one has tried or gone along similar path? if so can you help a bit!

PS: the Portuguese one is called ALINUX !But I don’t speak the language and the whole thing is in Portuguese!

My experience with Netbeans is positive, both with the openSUSE’s YaST package and the one I got from netbeans.org, never got a problem with it. Did you ever get to check your system log? You may find an answer there.
Other tools like MySQL, MySQL Workbench, Eclipse, etc run well for me too.

I had used Netbeans from Sun site with Sun java on openSUSE 10.4 64-bit version a couple of months back.

Hi CPU, thanks for the reply, actually the yaSt is a quagmire on this machine, each time it is activated it gives amessage application pid 7119 is blocking yast, I kill it, then I get another message after three kills it works, but the programs don’t get installed tried NETBEANS 3 times, it goes through the procedures and etc, but NETBEANS doesn’t show up!
I went to webpin, and clicked the INSTALL , only thing that was down loaded was a text describing the software(maxima)!

then, the FIRST thing you should do is figure out how you broke
YaST…but, is probably too hard, so to try to fix it:
open a terminal, type su - hit enter, and give the root password,
then (ONE line at a time, and WAIT for all processing to complete,
before the next:
rpmdb --rebuilddb
zypper ref
zypper up
After that try using YaST to load the desired software…

Reference maxima, I have never run this, but from what I can see, you have the basic app you can install, and you also have the user interface (front end) that you need to install (ie BOTH). In the case of maxima basic package, you have a choice of v.5.17.0 packaged as a factory version (BEST TO AVOID IMHO) or you have v.5.16.3 as part of the education packaging, which is the version IMHO you should try. Then you need to get one of the wxMaxima front ends working with it and there you have 3 choices, one is the “science” build service packaging, another is the FACTORY packaging (BEST TO AVOID) and the other is the Education packaging, which IMHO is the version you should apply.
Note for the Netbeans, I also have never run this, but I hope you noted that you have three choices. … You can install the v.6.0 from the openSUSE non-oss web site (I would be VERY surprised if that does not work) or you can install the v.6.5 from the Education build packaging or from gerritbeine build packaging. Also, and this is important, if the Netbeans v.6.0 does not work, you should write a bug report on openSUSE.
As noted by Cross_AM, NETBEANS appears to be java related, so you may need to ensure you have the appropriate java version setup.
we managed to install Netbeans but once clicked to start after a minute appearing then disappears! As with maxima goes in a circle,
it needs libzypp.so.424, which it asks for libzypp.so.523, which then asks for the first one namely libzypp.so.424!
we need to Install lot of Software, and it be impossible at this rate, some old hand with linux suggested to use 64 bit version, but most students are cash strapped and run old 32 bit computers!
However we will try the 64Bit option and if there wasn’t much success will drift to Debian or Fedora! But would have been nice to have stayed with Suse, it has class of its own!

Since Netbeans is included with openSUSE basic OSS, you should imho write a bug report on openSUSE implementation of netbeans: Submitting Bug Reports - openSUSE By doing that you will get the attention of the packager at openSUSE who packaged Netbeans.
