Is there anyway to change just the software updater icon?
would love to see it red when there are updates needing to be installed and green when everything is up to date…
currently running KDE openSUSE default theme and would like to change just the icon.

Don’t believe that is an option you would need to change the code and or the resources (ie pictures) used. If you think that it is needed you can tell the KDE deelopers that you do and maybe get others to join you. Remember this is a community project so if you can’t program get a programer(s) interested in making the change and submitting it to the KDE project.
And when you go to KDE, it might be better to call that application by it’s name. It is Apper.
Well, the icon is part of the desktop theme, so you can actually change it.
Try to set a different theme in “Configure Desktop”->Workspace Appearance->Desktop Themes, and the icon should look different.
By replacing or editing the corresponding file you should be able to use the openSUSE theme and only change that icon.
The file is named kpackagekit.svgz and is located in /usr/share/apps/kde4/desktoptheme/openSUSE/icons/ (replace “openSUSE” the name of the theme you use).
As this is a svgz file you can use inkscape f.e. for changing it.
But I don’t think it’s possible to change its color when there are updates without changing the code. AFAIK the applet always shows the “kpackagekit-updates” icon even when there are no updates. There are specific icons for “security updates” and “important updates” though.
Normally the icon should be hidden anyway though when there are no updates.
