TestDisk and PhotoRec come highly recommended…
You didn’t say if the devices are damaged or otherwise hard to access. If not damaged, then some useful ways ways are:
If you’re using KDE, use the “Device Notifier” applet in the Panel to open devices that you plug in (e.g. flash drives/cards). For partitiions, just mount them by clicking on the icon for them in “Places” in Dolphin and then navigate to them in the filesystem using Dolphin.

I’ve used both programs, and it’s actually a little scary what you can recover. I had a bit more success with PhotoRec. The cool part of this program is that you can specify what type of files you want to search for based on extension.
