Hi,
I installed 11.2 rc2 off a gnome live cd. I’m having trouble with the software manager. Everytime i open the software manager, by default it preselects a list of “recommends” & “suggests” packages, which mostly include help docs, dictionaries and the like in all sorts of languages ( The download adds up to well over one Gig ). How do i disable this behaviour. I tried setting “installRecommends = no” in /etc/zypp/zypper.conf but it doesnt help. This is pretty annoying.

well, i’ve never booted 11.2 so i may be off base here, but:

there are no recommended or suggested packages there…

those are just the packages AVAILABLE…

to me it looks like changed the spin selector from “Search” to
“Groups”, and if you change it back then you can use it to easily find
software by name…and, if you (say) type in ‘java’ and click search
the resulting list will have LOTS of stuff…none of which are
suggested or recommended, just a long list what is available that has
something to do with “java”…if you need java 1.4.0 or 1.5.0
or 1.6.0 from SUN or openjdk are all things YOU have to decide,
for yourself–and, they may be completely different from my needs, or
the next persons need…

YaST can’t know what you need and it doesn’t suggest or recommend…

however, after you make a selection, THEN it will look around to see
if what you selected have dependencies which must also be
installed…and, it will show you a list of those…

I’ve noticed the same behavior. There are certain packages that are recommended for a “full” desktop experience. This is separate from the zypper install recommends. It is usually flash, java, etc. After adding the Nvidia repo and reopening the package manager, it has auto selected the Nvidia driver for install. The only way I’ve found to disable this is to manually deselect these packages and then apply just like you were installing something. After doing that, they were no longer auto selected when I started the package manager.

Hey, thanks for taking time off to reply. I understand the dependency thing, but its different here. If u take a closer list at the screenshot, to the right u’ll see the preselected packages imm talking about. For eg, openoffice help docs in russian or italian cant be dependencies, right?
And i can confirm this same behavious happened when i tried 11.1 as well. Yast preselects packages and there are so many of them thats its annoying to deselect them one by one because i dont see a deselect all option.

There so many packages selected in my case (worth well over 1GB download) and i cant seem to find a deselect all option ? Is there one?
And there ought to be a more elegant way to get rid of this ?
I tried using smart but for some reason it doesnt work with the main-OSS and non-oss repos :frowning:

You should let it install them IMO

I just thought to myself that if you are using Gnome, it has a different front end and may not have the same options. With KDE and the original Yast package manager, you can select the “installation summary” tab and right click on the list and select “all in this list” and then “do not install”.

Off possible help could something in russian or afrikaan be to me ?? It’d wasting both SUSE’s and mine bandwidth, not that it may mattet to suse, but certainly to me as im not on one of those ultra-fast connections

I think this is different when you install from DVD or net.iso.
Then you can select exactly what you want, starting from text
instalation without x if you like and add whatever it is you like.

Live CD is a live system, installable one, with a selection of packages,

But whats the point in forcing the user things he is not gonna need anyway. Its like im just off a fresh install. I open the software manager to install my favorite player and yast first wants install a gig of worthless ( to me ) packages, with no easy way of deselecting them ( the only way i could find out was to manually deselect each item, close to 500 packages, how comfortable ? )

Well i just spend 20 minutes deselecting them manually and as u said , the next i opened yast they werent selected :slight_smile: so cheers

I think the Gnome version uses packagekit. You might make a feature request on open fate for this type of option. There also might be a cli command to turn this off, but I can’t find anything in the documentation.

It’s been discussed earlier time to time.

It seems to me that netinstall.iso and DVD are best suited for
controlled installations, Live systems are for trying out and getting a
feeling of the distro.

I’m not at all in favor of installing from the live ones.
I just wish they’d make a netinstall USB image, CD is so last season…

The gnome version uses both packagekit and yast software module.
I had been looking for a solution to this on the irc the whole day. It was kind of strange that no one there noticed it before. Guess everyone uses dvds

I dont thinks there is anything wrong with the livve cd . This is probably just an oversight.

I explain there why of the installation of packages related to extra languages.

But this behavior is already there in 11.1. I don’t understand the surprise.

Once you deselect them they are added to /var/lib/zypp/SoftLocks, that’s why they aren’t selected again in the next run.
But the correct way to change the behavior is to set solver.onlyRequires to true in /etc/zypp/zypp.conf (/etc/zypp/zypper.conf, as its name implies, only affects zypper, the CLI tool)

I was actually surprised because

  1. I am a new to suse, couldnt get around this in 11.1 , so didnt stick with it
  2. I spent like the entire day on the SUSE irc and no one could tell how to disable it. Infact , very few acknowledged that this issue even exists, probably every one installs suse off a dvd
