software manager failing

For some time past I’m having this problem on
openSUSE-10.3-GM-GNOME-i386.iso installed on my Dell-Inspiron-1150
laptop with Intel-Celeron.
Most of the time I try to access ‘Install Software’ or 'Software
Repositories i’m getting the message ‘Accessing Package Management
Failed. Another Process is accessing the package database. Package
management cannot be used now.’ The rare occasion I have the ‘Software
Repositories’ accessible and after downloading packages for adding a
particular repo I press ‘Finish’ the ‘Bug-Buddy’ informs me that the
process has crashed.

Is it something to do with my laptop or the installation CD or what?

I shall appreciate receiving suggestions. Thanks all.

What it means is that you already have an application running - using
the package database.

You can only run one instance. Reboot and check what process are
running. Using ‘top’ from a terminal can be helpful to see info on that.

Box: Linux 2.6.25.18-0.2 x86_64 | OS 11.0 | (KDE4.1.82) “3.1” | M2N4-SLI
| AMD 64 X2 5200+ | nVidia 8500GT | 2GB RAM
Lap: OS 11.0 | Celeron 550 | (KDE 4.1.82 “release 3.1” | Intel 965 GM |
Lenovo R61e | 1GB RAM

More often than not, it’s the openSuSE updater applet checking for
updates. It does this after each login, and it takes a looong time
doing it. So just refrain from using YaST’s software installation
functions in the first half hour or so after login.
