Software management, zypper, ..., crashes with segfault

Some of symptoms:

  • Software update widget doesn’t work. Now it crashes with error (from ~/.xsession-errors-:0) :
New Notification: "Update Error" "The task was forcibly canceled The task was canceled successfully and no packages were changed.
The backend did not exit cleanly." -1 & Part of: 0
  • git fetch
    ], git clone] don’t work (silently exited); - yast → Software management don’t start (ask root password - then nothing);
  • from terminal: sudo yast2 online_update
    ] crashes with message (***):

/usr/sbin/yast2: line 440: 16390 Segmentation fault $ybindir/y2base $module "$@" "$SELECTED_GUI" $Y2_GEOMETRY $Y2UI_ARGS

  • zypper se
], zypper verify] - Segmentation fault (if as root - nothing output); - sudo zypper re
f] - nothing output, sudo zypper dup] - write warning (Warning: You are about to do a distribution upgrade…) and then nothing.

OpenSuse leap 42.1 - installed from disk about 2 months ago, autoupdates worked every day.
What’s the cause/reason - it’s not clear. Everything was fine until i notice 1-2 day ago - get fetch] exited silently. Just internet through browser works correctly.

There are some similarity (e.g. with (***) msg) with that: https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=972783, but it is different situation.

git is completely unrelated to openSUSE’s package management.

Use “su -” instead.

Well, if not even zypper works, it will probably be hard to fix.
Do you use btrfs as filesystem? You could revert back to a working snapshot then…

Let’s start with the YaST crash though, please post the last lines of /var/log/YaST2/y2log.
And also try to reproduce your problems on a fresh user account to see whether they happen system-wide or are specific to this user somehow.

Hm, it crashes in libssl/libcrypto.
Explains why other things like git are affected too.

Try to run “sudo zypper patch”, does this output anything (and not crash)?
Also please post your repo list with details, your list doesn’t really tell much:

zypper lr -d

But if zypper doesn’t work, it will be difficult to get back to a consistent state anyway if incompatible packages are installed.
You’d have to download and install packages manually with rpm.

I have to reply like this?:

This shows that you do indeed use btrfs.
You should be able to boot a previous snapshot from the boot menu then and revert.
See https://doc.opensuse.org/documentation/leap/reference/html/book.opensuse.reference/cha.snapper.html#sec.snapper.snapshot-boot

Try to run “sudo zypper patch”, does this output anything (and not crash)?

Outputs nothing.

Also please post your repo list with details, your list doesn’t really tell much:

Ok, I don’t really see anything obviously wrong there.
But then, some package from one of the 2 extra repos may have blocked some update… (especially telephony would sound like at least some things in there would use/require libssl or libcrypto)

Please post the exact versions of the involved packages:

Very strange! This discussion is in the Russian Language Forum: Pусский (Russian) > Поддержка > Общий.

To keep the forums tidy and to bring this thread to the other English language members, I will move this to Applications in the English language section.

It is CLOSED for the moment.

Moved from Общий and open again.

Indeed.
I saw this thread on the “Activity Stream” page, and didn’t look in which forum it was…

Hm, looks fine, these are all the latest versions from the update repo.

I just noticed something I overlooked in your YaST backtrace though:

2016-11-03 16:04:20 <5> ur-15(11904) [zypp] ZYppFactory.cc(sigsegvHandler):53 [bt]: (5) /usr/lib64/libssl.so.37 : SSL_library_init+0x235 [0x7f8e51e8c065]

OpenSSL’s libssl is named libssl.so.1.

So let’s check where this comes from:

rpm -qf /usr/lib64/libssl.so.37

 3 | openSUSE-42.1-0 | openSUSE-42.1-0 | Yes | (r ) Yes | No | 99 | yast2 | cd:///?devices=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-Optiarc_DVD_RW_AD-5200S

That is the install media remove it

zypper rr 3

Once you install it is not needed

This very well may be the culprit.

I don’t think the rest of the packages will work with libressl if they are not compiled against it.

Try to uninstall it:

sudo rpm -e libssl37

Will probably cause a conflict though, as it may have replaced some other, standard, package.
But the error message would hopefully give clues how to proceed.

Try to uninstall it:

sudo rpm -e libssl37
error: Failed dependencies:
libssl.so.37()(64bit) is needed by (installed) libtls9-2.3.0-7.1.x86_64
        libssl37 = 2.3.0 is needed by (installed) libressl-devel-2.3.0-7.1.x86_64

See also - i’ve updated previous comment.

Ok, then try to remove those packages as well:

sudo rpm -e libssl37 libressl-devel libtls9

In particular libssl37 needs libcrypto36, but your backtrace only mentions libcrypto1 (which likely is incompatible), so there is a clash somewhere regarding this.

sudo rpm -e libssl37 libressl-devel libtls9
root's password:
error: Failed dependencies:
pkgconfig(libssl) is needed by (installed) libmysqlclient-devel-10.0.27-12.1.x86_64

So, i’ve done:

sudo rpm -e libssl37 libressl-devel libtls9 libmysqlclient-devel

And now:

We can ignore that one for now (and later install openssl-devel instead), or just remove libmysqlclient-devel too.
Let’s try the latter first, to be sure that we don’t overlook some dependency:

sudo rpm -e libssl37 libressl-devel libtls9 libmysqlclient-devel

also take a look for my previous comment.

Hm, something still does require libssl37:

But it’s not that plugin itself, at least not the one from 42.1.

Maybe “ldd /usr/lib64/YaST2/plugin/libpy2Pkg.so.2” would give a clue?
