When I go to yast - software management - it first starts downloading lots of things. My question is: what is it downloading and is it installing anything on the system?

No it’s not installing, it’s refreshing the info available for download. Just let it do it’s job. You will then have the finished UI for software management, where you can select packages to add for install.
