Smooth scrolling?

I have a thinkpad here, and as many know, thinkpads have trackpoints, the little red mousing nub in the middle of the keyboard.
Well, in my 12.1 KDE install (now Tumbleweed), it detected and configured the trackpoint successfully for scrolling, right out of the box.
Except for the one annoying part, its not smooth scrolling. Its line-by line, which with a trackpoint, is incredibly irritating. is there any way i can enable precise, smooth, pixel by pixel scrolling in opensuse? I would like a nice smooth progression down the page as i press the nub with its corresponding scroll button, not jerky line by line movement as it halfassedly emulates a notched scrollwheel. Is this possible?

i’m sure it would be if the thinkpad maker provides a trackpoint driver
for linux…do they?

i guess they do for Windows…

actually, now that i think more about it, have you done this:

Personal Settings - Configure Desktop > Hardware > Input Devices
and, look in the left pane (where i have “Keyboard”, “Mouse”, “Touchpad”
and “Joystick”) and see if you have a “Trackpoint”

if so click on it and see what kinds of controls show up on the right
side of the pane…that is, for my mouse and touchpad i have all sorts
of knobs to fiddle with…maybe you will have the same for your
Trackpoint…

if you don’t i guess it is because the thinkpad maker has neither
provided a linux driver nor the precise hardware info needed for one to
be built by a linux developer…

i didn’t look though these, but maybe you find other hints therein:

This seems to be more a problem with some applications, I also have a
ThinkPad and scrolling with the Trackpoint (middle button pressed +
pulling the trackpoint) scrolls absolutely smooth in Firefox for
example. In Thunderbird it scrolls too fast so that it appears as if it
is line based (which I am a bit in doubt it is, I am playing a bit with
that at the moment).

ThinkPad E320: oS 12.1 x86_64 | i3@2.30GHz | 8GB | KDE 4.8.4 | HD 3000

I dont have smooth scrolling in firefox either. Also no trackpoint specific settings in the input devices config in kde. It doesnt even have to be specific to the trackpoint, i just want to find a way to turn on pixel based scrolling instead of line by line. One of the problem that came up in my research was that xorg only supported 2 axis for mouse devices, x and y for pointer movement, and scrolling was sent as a button press. i heard that was fixed at the end of last year where they added support for more axis and inherently, the option for smooth scrolling. I just want to know how the heck i can enable it.

I haven’t come up with anything yet. has anyone else? i just wish i could get this figured out.
