I was very curious about Meego, so pleasantly surprised to see it was available as a desktop choice for openSUSE. Could not get it to work, since whatever icon on the top I click, it does “something”, then minimizes to a little square in the top left corner of the desktop. Same goes for the LiveCD, booted from an SHDC card, from USB-stick.
KDE4, Gnome, XFCE and LXDE all run fine on the laptop, just Smeegol doesn’t. Not with NVIDIA driver installed and running it as a desktop on my laptop, not with nouveau driver when running from LiveCD image.
Can anybody give me the clue needed to get Smeegol working?
BTW, I have not found a way to interact with the desktop, no terminal window or whatever helpfull things, so I cannot provide any output yet.
Not sure you’re alone going on comments here openSUSE News then there is a thread on the mailing list not sure it is related but perhaps it is. Either way I would suspect there would be the best place to get an answer. openSUSE Mailinglist Archive: opensuse-goblin
Did better than me seems to crash the xserver in vmware but I have to confess far from a usual way of installing. I had a 11.3 text only install(vmware) then used the one click cli.
OT:
Encountered some weird dep problems to first no dep on xorg-x11 this then didn’t bring in xorg-server I seem to have an error around gtk2 too something about … gdk-pixbuf.loaders no such file. It can’t recognize png(Suspect dep problem again) xorg seems to be crashing after a glx call(mmm I think this is mutter which from a little googling is the wm for moblin crashing(clutter-critical then it call mutter)) I’m sure these are related but alas I’ve now lost interest.
Hi
It’s working fine here. It is designed for netbooks 1024x600 screen
(AFAIK, intel/atom). Maybe try in virtualbox (as there are drivers
loaded for it).
I have a minor issue with the power button notification (doesn’t time
out) else it’s pretty much a 11.3 install (see sig) with the netbook
customizations.

Found some comments about compiling mutter with NVIDIA support indeed, but didn’t have the time to dive into that. But…the devs apparently did: Smeegol desktop works now on my laptop. Ditto on my son’s HP mini Netbook. On the netbook it’s great, fast & stable, on the laptop it has some occasional hickups, but overall feel is OK.
Thanks to all thinking along, thanks to the devs for yet another very nice piece of work. I’ll report on my experiences, will be working from it today.
