sluggish firefox3.6.8

i’m using openSUSE 11.3, 32 bit. KDE desktop.

firefox3.6.8 loads the pages, but they take forever to load.
i have a DHCP 300kbs connection.
i’ve checked my modem, and i’m getting the expected speed.
i’ve changed the DNS ips in /etc/resolv.conf to
205.171.3.65
205.171.2.65
and still firefox is sluggish as heck. >:(

I am noticing the same problem - I am on a very fast cable connection at the moment but FF continually ‘stutters’ for the want of a better word. Even when opening one or two tabbed pages at a time FF locks up and doesn’t appear to be doing anything, then after ten - forty + seconds (depending on how many pages I am opening) It will kick on and load them. Even on starting FF there is a definite lag in opening my home page.

i just downloaded and installed google Chrome and it works great.
i’m dumping firefox.

Did you disable IPv6?

Good luck.

There’s a number of problems with FF 3.6.x being sluggish. Big suspected culprits are the addons.

I think 3.6.10 for openSUSE is out now, but so far it doesn’t appear to improve performance.

FF 4 Beta 1 is an improvement and FF 4 Beta 2 is out now, but I haven’t installed it yet.

Why would IPv6 affect FF 3.6.8?

A fair question. First, the quick answer, it has caused problems before.

For a bit more the second report in this thread from Dwarfer99 states that
FF “stutters” and doesn’t seem to do anything for many seconds. With IPv6
enabled the system will try to resolve something (www.google.com for
example) using DNSv6 by searching for an AAAA record, which may even
exist. Unfortunately, chances are good that few people using Linux are on
a network where the resulting IPv6 address (if it even exists, though it
does for Google) can be reached and so the browser may experience this
timeout either when doing the lookup (DNS) or when trying to access. When
those fail the system will fall back to IPv4 and succeed. As the entire
connection is non-functional until the timeout is hit and things are
retried this appears to be an application stalling.

Good luck.

For what it is worth, I have disabled IPv6 through About:Config and Firefox is very responsive here. No “stuttering” whatsoever. I am also on 3.6.8.

If its good enough for you, its good enough for me.

Thanks for both explanations. Joopberis said it fixed his sluggishness, I’ll try it in my FF 3.6.10.

Using 3.6.8, and testing 4.0b-6.1, both of which had problems. Disabling IPV6 via about:config has resulted in a definite improvement. Cheers
