I bought a new monitor that had the maximum resolution as 1920x1080. My graphics card is ATI Technologies Inc RV730 PRO [Radeon HD 4650], which supports this resolution. The problem I’m having is that now when the scrolling of a website or document is very slow. I’ve tried this on both GNOME and KDE and observe the same thing. Otherwise I have no issues, the switching between desktops/windows is OK. Any ideas?
Thanks.

You did not indicate if you are loading the proprietary AMD/ATI video driver. But if you are not, you may want to. Look into the following message thread for more information:
Upgrading ATI driver with atiupgrade - Page 9
Thank You,
Apologies, it is using ATI’s own drivers.

It is hard to determine what slow means. Consider that if your monitor area is larger and the scroll rate is the same, it would seem to be slower as relatively speaking it is slower percentage wise. If everything else looks OK, the screen does not break up and you can play videos then perhaps you are just not used to the larger higher resolution screen. Perhaps the scroll rate is already kind of slow for some reason. Normally, loading in the proprietary video driver is the best you can do in Linux.
Thank You,
What I meant by slow is that when I try to scroll a website for example it appears as if the website refreshes as I scroll. So the scroll speed is affected significantly. For example to scroll from the top to bottom of this page takes more than 20 seconds if I use the mouse scroll. I also just noticed that I can no longer make Youtube videos maximise, the video stops when I try to do that. I haven’t tried viewing a video on vlc or something yet though.
So a quick lookup of the Radeon HD 4650 shows it to be a 2009 release and that it is AGP. Is that correct? I don’t know what computer you have installed it on, but the last AGP system I had did have some throughput issues with AGP. While the chipset could be put on anything, the fact that it is AGP with a much larger screen resolution may be pushing it to the limits. Tesll us more about the computer and video card and how old this setup might be. I can say that with the advent of newer monitors, one may have to upgrade the video system as well.
Thank You,
Many thanks for the reply. I actually tried a lower resolution, 1440x900 and have the same issues. The ATI drivers were actually installed on this machine yesterday. Before these drivers were installed I could not support the maximum resolution of 1920x1080, but I did not have this issue with a lower resolution of 1440x900. So the problem is with the ATI drivers.
I don’t exactly know how old this computer is (is there a way to find that out?). But it came with Windows 7, so I presume it’s less than 2 years. I don’t know what extra information I could get for the video card though.
Unfortunately I don’t have root access on this machine so I’m limited as to what I can do, I’ll inform the admin about this issue.

Lets say we always want the most out of our computers, but to get the job done, perhaps we don’t really need the most and perhaps a reduced resolution is what you need to use. It does not hurt to try and we learn experience from everything we try, but don’t lose site of our goal to get real and required tasks completed. Good luck in what ever you decide to do.
Thank You,
