Slow rendering - Intel X3100

Hello folks,

I think there is something terrible with my system (C2D T8100, Intel GM965 X3100). I have installed the stable v11.1 of openSUSE with stable repositories (apart from KDE 4.2 from the factory rep.) and from the very beginning everything is kind of slow.

Glxgears give me 600 FPS, Compositing works, but the system is not very responsive. Scrolling is very choppy in Firefox and Opera, less in Konqueror. Moving windows is extremely choppy with Compositing and TuxRacer “runs” at 6 FPS @ 800x600, all effects off.

What is weird is that 720p movies run quite OK.

Direct Rendering Yes, AIGLX on, OpenGL rendering or XRender used (no big difference). Nothing is really malfunctioning.

Anyone knows what to do to make it useable?

This is a widespread issue across many distros using recent Xorg versions (try googling). I think you should search for or submit bug report along the same lines.

Googled inside Bugzilla and found something - adding

Option “AccelMethod” “EXA”

into xorg.conf’s Section “Device” does quite a lot. Window management under OpenGL is waaay smoother (XRender is still a bit slow) and overally the system is sped up. However, it didn’t solve the Tux Racer problem, so a bug report is imminent.

Hi,

You are luckier than me. My graphics card is:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

and I have too many problems with this card and openSUSE 11.1. My
glxgears give me about 400 fps. These are Intel video driver bugs and they
are present in all distributions of Linux. New drivers where released in April
(Intel Linux Graphics) but I think they are present only in unstable
packages of Xorg.

Well, I had some bugs fixed when edited my “/etc/X11/xorg.conf” and now
I have

Option "AccelMethod" "XAA"

on the section “Device”. Now scroll on firefox is much better and I have
no scrambled screen on KDE start up
(Intel 945G - temporary scrambled screen starting KDE - Page 2 - openSUSE Forums),
AssaultCube does not make my system freeze any more, although it
is still too slow. Note this is just a work around for some bugs.
Most of the bugs must only be fixed with the new drivers, I hope.:expressionless:

Well, probably it is the same for you.

Bye.
