Slow Internet on Suse 11.2 - thats a modern distro??

If I make a speed test the download rate is 1 Mbit/s instead of 15. Even the upload rate is faster than that: about 1.2 Mbit/s (upload suppose to be 1.5). I am lagging if I play games WoW for instance.

I am using a Linksys Router. I just switched form DSL to a Cable ISP. Never had similar issues /w the DSL. The download rate was faster.

My PC is dual boot. If I boot to Windows XP its just fine. The Ubuntu on my sisters laptop is just fine and the other Vista PC in the network gets full rates as well.

openSUSE 11.2 (64 bit) KDE 4.3.1

I googled the topic and did following changes already:

  1. Disabled ipv6 in Yast and in Firefox also.

  2. Changed in the file /etc/sysconfig/network/config

NETCONFIG_DNS_POLICY="auto"
to
NETCONFIG_DNS_POLICY=""
  1. added the values belov to /etc/sysctl.conf
net.ipv4.tcp_window_scaling = 0
net.ipv4.tcp_reordering = 20
net.ipv4.tcp_wmem = 8192 87380 16777216
net.ipv4.tcp_rmem = 8192 87380 16777216
net.ipv4.tcp_no_metrics_save = 1
net.ipv4.tcp_congestion_control = cubic
net.core.wmem_max = 16777216
net.core.rmem_max = 16777216

Please help, I can not believe I need to reinstall Suse or switch to an other distro just because of this.

Was there not a change with the 2.6.28 kernel (and hence impacting openSUSE-11.2 with its 2.6.31 kernel) that the old traditional methods of disabling ipv6 do not work?

Please take a skim thru this thread:
[11.2] IPv6 is not Disabled!? - openSUSE Forums](http://forums.opensuse.org/network-internet/426511-11-2-ipv6-not-disabled.html)

Did everything useful I could find:

Added in grub’s menu.lst (useing Yast)

ipv6.disable=1

Added to /etc/sysctl.conf

net.ipv6..conf.all.disable_ipv6 = 1

This as well (what ever it does) :S

su -c "echo 'install ipv6 /bin/true' > /etc/modprobe.d/ipv6"

Did couple of restarts. Issue is the same. Did couple of tests again: 1 Mbit/s, sometimes 2 Mbit/s, one I had 7 Mbit/s… But please its far away from 15 :’(

And by the way: What if I want to use ipv6??? If this really a general bug how is it possible that its not the news yet that the Suse-Novel headquarters were attacked by disappointed and angry users :’( :’( :’(

Difficult to say what the problem with your setup is, except it’s unlikely to be a problem with openSUSE. I use ADSL2+ and get fast download speeds that are pretty much the equal of what I get in Windows. And that’s on a plain vanilla setup without any special sorcery involved.

Everything was fine while I had DSL… But i am on cable-net now. :frowning:

Windows and Ubuntu sensed nothing because of the change. :S

net.ipv6..conf.all.disable_ipv6 = 1
        ^^

Why two dots in a row here?

The IPV6 problem does not exist if you really use IPV6. In fact, it
doesn’t really cause the problem you are seeing as its slowdown is due
to timeouts in IPV6 nameserver requests.

Rather that blaming openSUSE for not being “a modern distro”, how
about giving us some information about your link to your router. Wired
or wireless? What driver is being used?

BTW, I get in excess of 1000 KB/s through my cable modem and Linksys
router using a wireless connection to the router. That did not change
when I went from 11.1 to 11.2 and is the full “Turbo-boost” that Time
Warner gives me. Testing through a wired connection to another host on
my LAN gives me 96 Mb/s, very close to the 100 Mb/s of the network.

openSUSE 11.2 is a modern distro!

Router: Linksys WRT54GR

I have both, wlan and lan. But I would be happy if only the LAN would work as this is not a laptop.

pci.product = ‘88E8001 Gigabit Ethernet Controller’
pci.subsys_vendor = ‘ASUSTeK Computer Inc.’
linux.hotplug_type = 2 (0x2)
linux.subsystem = ‘pci’
info.linux.driver = ‘skge’
pci.subsys_product = ‘Marvell 88E8001 Gigabit Ethernet Controller (Asus)’

pci.product = ‘AR2413 802.11bg NIC’
pci.subsys_vendor = ‘D-Link System Inc’
linux.hotplug_type = 2 (0x2)
linux.subsystem = ‘pci’
info.linux.driver = ‘ath5k’
pci.subsys_product = ‘D-Link AirPlus G DWL-G510 Wireless PCI Adapter(rev.B)’

BTW I am just and avanced user not an expert :frowning:

OMG!!! I do apologize!!!

It was a hardware issue. There was an old switch between my PC and the router. I took it out and now I get full rate!

I booted to windows (which I was not using for 6 years now). Suse RuleZ! I know this for 6 years now!!!

If you have both wired and wireless interfaces configured, try disabling one (delete it in YaST) and see if that makes a difference.

Sure it wasn’t a modern switch?

I hate to bring this thread up again, but I couldn’t find anywhere else that had an issue like this. I know the original person who posted this thread had a hardware problem.

I see a similar issue with Opensuse 11.2 on an Intel i7 920 + ASUS P6t.

When I first boot into OpenSuse everything runs fine, I can open firefox and browse normally. As time goes by say 1 - 2 hours, firefox will start getting page load errors. I can open Konquer and load the same page, but eventually it will start timing out also.

If I reboot into Windows7 when I see the problem I’m able to fully use the Internet Explorer, so i would discount it being a modem/router problem.

It seems over time something is causing my OpenSuse install to not respond on the network.

Any Ideas where to start looking? I think I tried to disable the IPV6, but since its such a pain I’m not sure if it was fully disabled.

I think I’ll try some stuff mentioned here:
Sooo slow Firefox on Suse 11.2 - LinuxQuestions.org

I’ll follow up if any of it works or not.

I was also experiencing very slow connection after installing OpenSuse. I’ve followed all the IPv6 advices but with no result at all. I tried to monitor the network and discovered, that when loading sites the load switched on and off repeatedly causing the slow connection mentioned above.

SOLUTION: Disable FireWall in yast

When the firewall is disabled, everything runs smoothly. I hope this will help anyone who are still struggling with this issue. :wink:

I have openSUSE-11.2 on an Intel i7 920 + Asus P6T. I disabled ipv6 upon install. It works great. Its fast. No page load errors that I have seen.

Such a pain to disable ? Why ?

The easiest way is to disable upon install. Simply ensure you install from DVD, and deselect the auto configure option. Or once installed, to test benefit of disabling ipv6, enter this boot code in the grub/boot/splash menu options line when booting:

ipv6.disable=1

Do NOT disable the YAST firewall. IMHO that is not good advice.

I note this is your first post on our forum.

May I say WELCOME to our forum and WELCOME to openSUSE.

Still, IMHO disabling the firewall is not only NOT necessary, it is bad advice.

If you have a problem I recommend you post on a separate new thread so you can get help on the problem, without disabling the firewall in YaST.

-GNOME suse 11.1 WiFi internet and installer works perfect
-GNOME suse 11.2 on laptop with WiFi not getting sufficient internet speed

-when using installer on 11.2 it is slow and on some repositories it installs while on others i have to skip because i get frequent errors like these

Download failed: Failed to download ./suse/i586/libdvbpsi5-0.1.6-5.1.i586.rpm from
Index of /distribution/11.2/repo/oss
History: - [HttpConnection.cc:127] Invalid response

-in addition i could not login suse forums using 11.2
-disabling ipv6 or firewall did not improve speed of installer or web browser

-i don’t know if “* ** server can’t find ipconfig: NXDOMAIN *” indicates a problem when i type ipconfig i get

     * ipconfig 73.135.133.103

      Address:	132.138.1.234#53
      ** server can't find ipconfig: NXDOMAIN*

NXDOMAIN or Non-Existent Domain is a term used for the Internet domain name that is unable to be resolved using the DNS implementation owing either to domain name not yet registered or the server problem.

This looks like a DNS problem. Please start a new thread to get the attention of the crowd and they will be able to help you.
