Slow desktop refresh

I was setting up desktop effects on my openSUSE 11.2 KDE 4.3.5. I realized that it was slowing down my computer tremendously. I disabled everything and restarted but everything is still slow. It’s actually slow to load pages, windows, etc. Windows get loaded slowly from top to bottom and flicker at first instead of just appearing. Any way to fix this?

Your videocard? Driver installed ?

Hit Alt-Shift-F12, that turns of the desktop effects completely.

Trust me, be patient and we’ll help you fix this.

Driver: xorg-x11-driver-video-radeonhd
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics RS780M

I did just recently installed an update for that driver from the repos, but things were working well until I adjusted the desktop effects.

Alt-Shift-F12 didn’t help :frowning:

Sorry, here is the version installed: 1.3.0_20100216_79a0ab2-0.1.1

I also have a system with ATI onboard video, and I had to install the driver from ATI website. Without it, the video refresh was very slow. When you open “My Computer” on your desktop (sysinfo:/), does it display correctly? Mine showed blank w/ error message when I didn’t have the ati driver installed.

By the way, I think you may need kernel-source installed for the ATI driver as it compiles new driver during installation…

I check sysinfo:/ and my driver is indeed unknown and I have no idea how that happened. I am hesitant to install the propriety driver, I prefer the open source one if i can use it since I like to support open source.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I first tried the ati driver from repo but it didn’t work. So, I had no choice but to go with the proprietary driver.

Good luck.
