Sles 9 to Opensuse 11.4 Migration

Hi,

I have a Sles 9 system that I want to migrate to Opensuse 11.4 on a new box.
The sles 9 system is using software raid 1.

Please comment on my intended plan.

  1. Stick a new Hard drive into sles 9 system.

  2. Boot with System Rescue CD and clone Sles 9 Drive (/dev/sda) onto a new drive.
i.e. I will not clone the mirrored drive. Therefore my new system will have a broken mirror.

  3. Stick the new cloned HD into new box. Stick in a new hardrive to fix the broken mirror.

  4. I dont expect the system to boot from HD due to new hardware.

  5. Insert Suse 11.4 DVD and perform upgrade. Hopefully this works!

  6. Copy partition table from /dev/sda to blank hd’s /dev/sdb

  7. Use mdadm to sync the mirror drives.

  8. Uses Gparted to expand the drives to use max capacity of new drives.

I kindly request the advice of linux gurus on the plan above… Will it work? Is there another way of doing it?

Thanks in advance

I seriously doubt if an upgrade will work or that the installer will even try. SLES and openSUSE are different families of products. One’s enterprise, the other’s community.

Somebody has done something similar:

TechnoBlog: Convert SLES to OpenSUSE

I don’t know if the “upgrade” will work.

As to the cloning, there are many ways. Me, I first install a small
partition in the target computer with the target system, that will serve as
“rescue” system. From that one, I would create the raid devices, then copy
over the original system via network. Then install grub on that one and
boot it.

One of many ways, I’m sure.
