hi (if this has been posted already can you please direct me to the link)
I have an hp 8540w with an intel 82577LM for ethernet – I can’t get it to work, the network utility says eth0 or wlan can’t be loaded because of missing firmware.

you are welcome to seek advice here, but BE ADVISED that many of the
answers might be from folks who have never run SLES (or maybe never even
heard of it before) and you are likely much better off if you seek
assistance from the Novell forums, via: http://forums.novell.com/
thanks for the advice! – I’m trying to run it on a laptop because I’d like to learn how to use suse but it’s sled desktop version more for enterprise or do you think I should use open suse?
Did some quick googling, and it looks like your wireless card is an Intel 6000-based card, that firmware is available in SLES (or SLED, not sure which you are installing). On my SLES server, I get this:
Refreshing service ‘nu_novell_com’.

You want the iwl6000-ucode file. That may come from the “extras” repository though, which is a bit of a chicken and egg problem if you can’t get to the internet to enable it
Now for the ethernet card:
If you have the installation CD, you can install the development headers (for the kernel version you are running, as well as things like “make” and “gcc”) from the installation media. But it’s strange that the intel site lists this card as being supported by the e1000 / e1000e driver, which are stock with SLES / SLED (I have them on my system). What happens if you manually load the drivers?
Since this is a network issue you are better off posting this in our network section. Our forum is more than just web based, it is also NNTP based, which means some of our network guru’s will not see your post here on the 64-bit web forum (as they may not have subscribed to the 64-bit).
openSUSE network issues are to be posted here: Network/Internet You can still try for SLED support here, even though as DenverD pointed out this forum does not specialize in SLED but rather openSUSE is where our focus is pointed.
ok just one more thing – I can’t install the drivers from source or the rpm I found which said it installed but didn’t show up, if I do ifconfig I only get the loop back address. I’ll try the fix from katanacb & I’ll post on the netwok forum next
I got it! I didn’t have the compiler installed, I reinstalled the OS & chose to install compiler & I got the headers now, then I downloaded e1000e driver from intel & installed it.
