Has anyone used it?
I’ve heard very little about it. Which openSUSE is it based on?
etc.

A little.

10.1, IIRC.

SLED is an option if you want a supported (as in “I want to phone a big company when I run into problems”) Linux desktop certified for or maybe even preinstalled on computers.
Else use Opensuse.

Another benefit to SLED over openSUSE is that updates can include fixes,
whereas the “fix” for many problems in openSUSE 11.0 (for example) will
be to WAIT for 11.1.

SLED10 is based on openSUSE 10.1, as has been pointed out. The
service-packs are there to make it more stable and introduce selected new
and mostly minor features. Unless I’m mistaken, it’s based on a 2.6.16
kernel which should tell you how old it is.
Now that openSUSE 11 is out, I’m sure Novell is now working on “Code 11”
versions of SLES/SLED.

OTOH you almost never get more recent app versions. Talk about Wireshark/Ethereal.

True. I usually take the risk on desktops and do upgrades often as
the openSUSE version updates… (with a LOT of risk mind you).
Some people can’t handle that level of risk. openSUSE doesn’t HAVE to
work at all.
