How does one install Skype after moving to Tumbleweed?

The same way you would if you were not using TW.

Thank you. Installed, no problem.

Moved from Ubuntu, don’t fully understand how TW works, repositories, etc. Would prefer not to crash my system.

TW is not for novices.

Thank you for the warning.

I’m a novice to SUSE, but not to Linux. So far, very impressed with 12.3…

Are you saying using TW is inviting trouble/crash?

Regards, grateful for your input.

This is a good guide: Portal:Tumbleweed - openSUSE Wiki

There’s a couple of things worth mentioning after 2 releases of TW experience:

  • TW is as stable as the released version, just don’t mess with non-TW repos
  • If packages are not available from a TW named repo, stick to the ones from the “current” repos.
  • Read instructions carefully, if you already know about linux, about repos, you’ll get an idea about how it’s organized.
  • Make sure you have a good reason to move to TW. There’s a lot to say pro rolling release, but equally as much pro nice clean install every 8 months. Some use TW to keep up to date with the latest software, yet stable, from just one repo, instead of f.e. extra repos for KDE, KDE-Extra, Libreoffice, Kernel, GNOME and so on.

What I’m personally waiting for/dreaming of is TW to become a real rolling release, where the released numbered version would be further optimized, stabilized snapshots.

Ok, then you may be fine.

It has more problems than the standard released version, yes.

Yes and no

The starting point for TW is the last stable release. But then it
departs slowly, taking things from factory when they are considered
stable enough.

So it also has similarities to factory, and sometimes it shares problems
with it. Of course, it also means it has more modern versions of things
that the stable release, which means: some new features, some solved
problems, some new problems. All of it

Thanks all for your responses. Points taken.

Seeing as I have TW at the moment, I’ll stay with it and see what happens. Best way to learn???
