Skype want root privileges?

I haven’t installed skype, i have downloaded it (static version) untared it and ran ./skype in that folder to use it.
Later when i rebooted the system i got very scary popup message:

The action you requested needds root privileges. Please enter root’s password below or click ignore to continiue with your current privileges.

Command: ./skype -session

(below it gave me space to enter passwd, button to remember passwd and below of that regular buttons “ignore”, “ok” and “cancel”)

Why skype for any reason whatsoever asking me for root privileges?

Mine doesn’t… I can’t imagine why it would unless you installed as
‘root’ or extracted as ‘root’ or something.

Good luck.

my guess is: the last time you shut down you left Skype
running…and, the system is trying to relaunch it but, for some
reason can’t do that without root powers…

AND, since that problem doesn’t occur here (or on AB’s machine) and
reading “I haven’t installed skype” i’d say if you do install skype
(per the directions, whatever they are–i forgot it has been so long)
then your problem will go away, also…

brassy

Why don’t you download the rpm? That’s a much easier instal and it works without a hitch.

@peteh100 & @brassy
i haven’t installed it. i do not want to install it because it’s not opensource. using it i do (very seldom) but i chose to use static version.

@ab
i would never run executable of a closed source app as ‘root’ would it be running it or as simple as extracting tar.

i will try to tail ps and post later my findings.
i don’t like it a bit.
