Skype startup error after update - oS 11.3 64bit KDE 4.6.0

Skype 2.2.0.35 beta (last version on site) was working until a couple weeks ago. After updating the system this week - both from opensuse updates and KDE 4.6 stable, skype will briefly show the contacts after login and then close with the following terminal output:

~> skype
Auto configuration failed
4126865168:error:0200100D:system library:fopen:Permissão negada:bss_file.c:126:fopen('/etc/ssl/openssl.cnf','rb')
4126865168:error:2006D002:BIO routines:BIO_new_file:system lib:bss_file.c:131:
4126865168:error:0E078002:configuration file routines:DEF_LOAD:system lib:conf_def.c:199:

“Permissão negada” above means “Permission denied”.

I moved ~/.Skype to a backup but it crashes in the same way.

I searched these fora and googled around but didn’t find anything pertinent yet.

Any help will be greatly appreciated, thanks.

In case it matters, I also changed the network connection this week. This computer was connected directly to an ADLS modem, now there is a DLink router between them. Network and internet connections work as before, of course.

I remembered that I have installed the apparmor rules as recommended in openSUSE’s skype wiki, /etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.skype. After removing this file and restarting the system skype works.

Any idea what is causing the problem (besides micro$oft, of course ;))?

My mother’s PC was ( is still ? ) having a similar problem, but her errors are different. She notes as soon as she logs on and the contacts are shown, it logs her off. I logged to her PC (in North America - I am in Europe) via vnc and running Skype from a terminal session, I noted this:

( The entire backtrace is here: SUSE Paste )

I ended up removing Skype completely, and also removing libv4l2-0-32bit, libv4lconvert0-32bit and libv4l-32bit. Plus I removed and deleting the directory /home/cpumother/.Skype. Then I re-installed the same version of Skype (skype-2.2.0.35-3.1.x86_64.rpm from Index of /repositories/home:/Lord_LT/openSUSE_11.3 which picked up and re-installed as dependencies libv4l2-0-32bit, libv4lconvert0-32bit and libv4l-32bit ) and it ‘seemed’ to work ok for a while. [Note - my setting up the mic and speaker on her PC with me in a different content was a challenge !! ] .

But then 2-days ago my mother reported the problem was back, and again it was taking her up to 8 attempts of re-staring Skype to stop it from crashing. One common symptom I noted (just before it crashed) when the contact list briefly came up, a large number of her contacts happened to be on line at the same time.

I’m also puzzled by this.

well, this may or may not work (it works for me when Skype closes
suddenly after a brief view of contacts):

delete (or rename if you wish)
~/.Skype/shared.lck
~/.Skype/shared.xml

may not work because i think you did that by renaming/moving ~/.Skype

try deleting
~/.Skype/shared.lck
~/.Skype/shared.xml

i think that will work for you, it does for me…

if it does, for cross-ocean ease you might want to put an executable
script on her machine like:

#!/bin/sh
# fix Skype, maybe
rm /home/[mommy]/.Skype/shared.*
exit

if you name it (say) ‘loveLee’ and put it in her path then you could
teach her to:
-Alt+F2
-type loveLee
-press enter
-try Skype again

I tired that (with only those files). It did not work in her case (I have seen that work in other cases). There was no need for me to state that as if you read my post where I stated that I (noting now later) deleted the entire ~./Skype directory. Of course when one deletes the ENTIRE directory, those are deleted (that was my one of my later approaches).

Thanks for the humour thou ! lol !

well, your reported “and it ‘seemed’ to work ok for a while” exactly
mimicked my experience after completely removing everything associated
with Skype everywhere i could track it down on my system…and when
reinstalling and starting over it worked for a while, and then stopped…

and, i deleted those two home files and it started working again…

it was therefore i offered it to you with a “try”…

anyway i have had Skype fail after removing those files and it works a
while–and then i have to delete those files again…and then after a
while even removing those files won’t “fix it” and i had to do another
complete uninstall and reinstall and . . .

try it, or not…ymmv (by the way, my Skype is 32 bit, on a 32 bit OS on
64 bit hardware)

[no, i have not logged a bug with Skype…hmmmm, maybe i did but i don’t
remember…last week i wanted putting a bug somewhere and i searched to
see if there was already one logged, and i found one that was exactly
my problem, exactly my hardware, exactly my symptoms and i looked to see
who had posted the bug…and, it was not loveLee, it was in fact me.]

Does it also happen with video disabled, i.e., not loading the v4l libs?

Indeed, it makes no difference.

I don’t know.

This is happening on my mother’s PC in a different continent and she is 85+ years old and debugging computers is not exactly her favourite past time  … so I may find it difficult to get that answer. If she wants only voice, she uses the phone. Its the video conference aspects of Skype that she likes.

I suspect that the closed nature of skype will constantly lead to issues like this. One thing you could try is to shorten the contact list - perhaps by setting multiple profiles - if you can’t do that from inside skype you can always create various .Skype folders (or just the contacts folder/file, whatever it is) and switch between them with a script. It’s a lame solution, but I doubt linux issues will get much attention from them, now that they belong to M$…

You can add one new rule to this file:
/etc/ssl/openssl.cnf r
This should solve problem with ‘permission denied’

Thanks SergeySmolensky, adding the rule “/etc/ssl/openssl.cnf r,” to /etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.skype worked.

But I also had to reload the apparmor rules for Skype for it to take effect.

sudo apparmor_parser -r /etc/apparmor.d/usr.bin.skype

Of course a restart would also do the job, but we aren’t using Windows are we.

Nice, thanks!

That’s a fix! 8)
Adding that extra rule to “/etc/apparmor.d/usr.bin.skype” worked for me.

However I had to execute

sudo /sbin/rcapparmor restart

to reload the apparmor rules on openSUSe 12.1
