Logitech webcam with mono mic
(Up to 11.4 I had to deactivate all ‘nice’ features like ALSA and phonon just to get mic in working).
Only after additional installation of pavucontrol I was able to get some action in the mic.
Pavucontrol is finally showing mic action.
But the skype test call is giving a much to fast replay of my input (only a short high noise answer of my speak)
What to do?
For me there seems to be no working calibration method.
Up from 10.0 it seems to be more and more complicated to get a working skype action, and the cause of troubles is not skype …
The audio installation in phonon may be working automatically for simple cases - in other it is from version to version really more and more impossible to get it working.
Skype works fine in openSUSE-11.4 using pulse audio on my desktop with a Logitech UVC compatible webcam and the webcam’s USB mic, and also the PC’s internal mic.
Using pulse audio on 11.4 on this PC was the easiest it has ever been for me with a mic. I don’t know why it does not work for you.
Fools rush in etc… I have sometimes found that a (non root) user is not included in the audio group. Including a user in the audio group has cured several of my audio problems. An easy check is to try the sound when logged in as root.
What I’ve got from my mic input is an squeaking answer which a much too high speed.
It might be twice so fast as the input (mono input splitted into stereo output?).
Differences to your installation might be:
x86_64 (skype is always running in 32 bit mode!)
my PC has a built in stereo mic interface (only no stereo mic for it). It seems to be impossible to deactivate this interface, I’m just able to pull it down.
In 11.4 I’d to deinstal some software (phonon, ALSA) to get proper reactions from skype.
My user was not included in the audio group, but doing that (as wjohnk suggested) was making no difference.

Do you think this is ONLY a Skype recording problem ? or ONLY a Skype playback problem ? or a system wide recording problem ?
What other applications have you tried to record ? To playback ?
I think it important to try to narrow down the scope of the problem (at least that is how I would go about investigating if it were my PC with this problem).
