Skype - No sound

openSUSE 13.2 64bit KDE

I have not used Skype for three weeks. I have invoked “zypper up” several times. Now Skype produces no sound. My pulse audio settings and Skype settings have not changed. My video and music players all work.

Any suggestions as to where I should start the diagnosis?

Suggestions? Yes.

Start by launching pavucontrol, and then launch Skype. Make a test call. Look carefully at the pavucontrol settings and ensure still configured correctly for Skype. Note pulse audio allows muting, controlling volume, and sending of audio to different devices on a per application basis.

If that all appears fine, and sound does not work, its possible our Skype application configuration files are at fault and not openSUSE-13.2. In which case, when Skype is not running, remove those files. ie remove /home/ionmich/.skype. Also remove /home/ionmich/.config/skype

Then launch skype and reconfigure with pavucontrol.

Also consider removing the pulse audio config files (if they exist) … ie /home/ionmich/.config/pulse and /home/ionmich/.pulse (if it exists)

If the above does not work, maybe your skype executable was corrupted - so remove skype and then install skype rpm again.

Thanks for the speedy response. I will follow your directions and report the results as soon as I replace my existing incredibly complicated sound card (optical digital inputs, RCA inputs, 5.1 channel, built-in espresso maker) with something simpler and easier to work with.
