Hi, having trouble with Skype, the mic output (most times) sounds high speed and high pitched, like a tape recording sped up, no-one can understand me, this happens even when doing a Skype test call.
I am running openSUSE 12.1 x86_64 KDE 4.7.2 (4.7.2) “release 5” on an HP Compaq dc7900
Using a Logitech usb uvcvideo (C120 i think) webcam
All working ok on previous system (11.4, 11.3, 11.2, 11.1) before I upgraded to 12.1, but on a different base computer, same webcam.
I haven’t seen any threads here that relate to it, but have seen some on some Ubuntu forums that say to change the default-sample-rate on
HOME/.pulse/daemon.conf, but that file doesn’t exist in my system.

I had the same problem on my upgraded install - deleting .skype folder
in my home fixed it.
Not sure if it applies, but in 11.4 I had to fiddle with skype’s audio setting to get the mic working. Nothing complicated, just select the right audio system - alsa in my case, your’s probably pulseaudio.
Same problem here,
I have a Logitech c160 webcam witch is an UVC device and works in Linux (11.4, or any other) without a glitch. This occurred with 12.1 and I found no way to fix it. I have installed pusle volume control and the only way
to fix it is: when it occurs is to go to configuration tab in pulse volume control and use the drop down menu to turn webcam mic off and then back on. Placing a call after that and its good.
Things I tried:
install everything in wiki on skype, disable pulse audio, try 32bit version of 12.1, deleting .skype like Zaitor said.
Strange thing is it works and it doesnt so there must be a solution but my knowledge about it ends here. By the way it works good on a regular mic (but thats not the solution)
Can someone look into this, its annoying a lot of us
Tried un-installing and re-installing Skype, installed as per the Support database page. By the way I’m using 64 bit OS.
Pavucontrol detects the mic ok when Skype is on a test call, and is responding to noise.
My mic is working, I have tried using arecord to create a test .wav file as per a post from Old CPU somewhere else in these forums, and it plays back fine.
In my OP I mentioned about changing the default-sample-rate on HOME/.pulse/daemon.conf, turns out this file is in /etc/pulse, I tried changing it from 44100 to 16000, didn’t make any difference.
Sometimes it works, other times it plays back fast, like a tape played back at 3-4 times normal speed.
This is really frustrating, I’ve used Skype on every version of openSUSE since about 10.3 and never had an issue before.
It would be interesting to know how widespread this problem is. Thanks for anyone who might come up with an answer.
I’m using googletalkplugin (with openSUSE 12.1) and the same thing is happening. Your fix at least enabled me to make calls. Thanks. Hope this is fixed soon.
I upgraded my kernel to the above mentioned 3.1.5-1-desktop x86_64 and rebooted but it has made no difference to the “chipmunk” sound recorded by my Logitech C310 using Skype’s core-testing service. I realise that a bug report has been filed and I hope that somebody can offer a fix sometime soon.
Does anybody know of a better program than Skype that doesn’t require a degree in computer programming to set up and that works on multiple platforms? I am currently using OpenSuse 12.1 64 bit OS and I hate Skype but can’t find anything else that is easy to set up and will allow me to chat via video call to a friend in Australia who has a Mac.
Many thanks for all the help so far and for filing the bug regarding the mic problem
Just tried deleting the directory and re-running Skype and it made absolutely no difference at all The recorded sound from my mic is still at the wrong speed. Anything else I can try please?
I have the same problem on openSuSE 12.1 Linux 3.1.0-1.2-desktop x86_64. It only appears when I make audio only calls. As soon as I activate video transmission too, sound is ok (even if video is only enabled in test within settings menu).

I have menaged to update my kernel and the problem resolves, but it creates a series of other problems with nvidia driver. So i reverted to default desktop driver and now am waiting for an regular update.
Current kernel is Linux 3.1.0-1.2-desktop x86_64 and the patch is in 3.1.5, so my question is:
Is 12.1 going to be updated to that version since its been more than 2 months?
